GRAND CELEBRATION
A COMPLETE SUCCESS

faces the day could not have been
in tune with the time of Eliza
beth which was the golden age of
English Literature. None seem
ed too young to en;er into the
festivities of the day. Much
credit should be given to the
teachers who must have devoted
many an hour to the planning
and arranging of the frolics and
capers played by their respective
grades. Shakespeare was seen
in the midst of the revelers, in
his quiet manner, enjoying the
May pole dances and many other
festivities engaged in both by
young and old.
After the May day festivities
were over the second part of the
afternoon program followed.
This was -when the characters
from the different plays of
Shakespeare paraded in glitter
ing colors before the throne- up
on .which stood stately Queen
Bess with modest Shakespeare.
The poet bowed and acknowl
edged with a gracious smile each
group as they passed before
him. The bright costumes suit
ed for each individual make up
added much to the great celebra
tion. Without these- costumes
the pageant could not have at
tained.such a supreme success.
The season of merry making
was completed at night in the
Columbia Theatre. There a
great crowd assembled to revive
the memories of Shakespeare
and his different plays. The
Shakespearean masque was pre
sented in a most graceful man
ner to an enthusiastic audience.
Many of the characters in the
plays of Shakespeare were. truly
represented in their original
style. This was in many re
spects the most successful ama
teur entertainment ever present
ed to the Columbia people.
The Pageant was presented
by the University of South Car
o,ina, Columbia College, Chicora
College for Women, and the
various schools thruout the city.
In addition, many grown ups
from town aided in the celebra
tion of the Shakespearean ter
centenary.
Much credit should be given
to Miss Sarah A. Spencer who
was in charge of the great un
dertaking. Credit too, must be
given to Dr. George A. Wau
chope who was the organizer of
the pageant.
