"Spirit, Mind, Body."
Mr. H. K. Bosmajian, an Ar
menian, gave a lecture on his na
tive land to a large audience of
students at Flinn Hall Thursday
evening.
Mr. Bosmajian is a native of
Armenian Turkey. He came to
this country in 1886 as a student,
and on account of the religious
intoleration of his country could
not return to it. For the past
few years he has been traveling
over America giving lectures
mainly to college students on the
political, religious, and social
conditions of his country. At
several intervals in his lecture
he rendered selections on the pic
calo, flute, and fife, and his talk
was filled with wit and humor.
He also sang several songs in his
native tongue.
The address was one of the
most entertaining that has been
given at the University this ses
sion and was enjoyed by all who
heard it.
Letter From Dr. Joynes.
"Mr. Editor of THE GAMECOCK:
"I had the good fortune to hear
this Monday morning, February
28, the address of Mr. Rose,
representing the United States
Department of Commerce, before
our student body. I regard it as
a great privilege, enjoyed by our
studenth, to hear from time to
time such addresses by men of
experience and distinction in the
various fields of life. These ad
dresses are educational, in the
very best sense.
When Mr. Rose spoke of the
importance, in a commercial
sense, of learning to speak Span
ish, I was reminded of an inci
dent in my own life, which I have
more than once related.
In 1886 1 was called to the
chair of Modern Languages in
Washington College, now Wash
ington and Lee University. Gen
eral Robert E. Lee was its presi
dent. In my first interview with
him, he asked: "Can you teach
Spanish?" and added: "Spanish
is destined to be the most impor
tant of all the modern languages
to our people." Time has long
since vindicated his prophecy.
Germany captures the trade of
South America because she sends
out young men qualified to speak
the language of those countries,
and every educated German, as a
rule, speaks at least one language
besides his own often more
than one. This is one of the se
crets of Gernman power.
Our' own University has now
an exceptionally' strong depart
mient of modern languages, andl
I hope that the opportunities for
learning to speak, as well as to
read, especially Spanish and Ger
man, may be more and more ap
preciated by our students."

The Citadel baseball practice
began Monday with "Tommy"
McMillan, a former Carolina
star, as coach.
For several seasons "Tommy"1
was the star shortstop for Caro
lina, both while in the Academic
and Law Department he was a
star member of the Gamecock
nine, in field work and with the
stick. He was one of the best
base runners Carolina had.
During the summer vacations he
played several seasons in the
Carolina League. After getting
his LL. B. in 1913 he was with
the Charleston Club in the South
Atlantic League and practiced
law in the winter. In 1915 he
gave up the game so that he
might give more time to his
legal profession, as a member of
the firm of Heyward & McMil
lan in Charleston.
Passing thru Columbia a few
days ago, Coach McMillan, said;
"we have a bright outlook at the
Citadel; and expect to put out a
corking good team."
