POUTY CLUB TO HEAR
HARVARD PROFESSOR
Professor to Speak Next
Thursday Night.
Dean L. T. Baker and Professor
Bradley Address Polity
Club at Last Meeting.
Dean Baker and Professor
Bradley spoke to the Polity Club
last Friday night in Flinn Hall.
The speaches were taken up
with facts concerning interna
tional relations. There was a
large crowd and much interes:.
Both speakers emphasized the
importance of a club of this
nature, since the University
does not offer a course of in
struction in international rela
tions. The club gives opportu
nity for students to do indepen
(lent and research work for
themselves, and thus gain much
information outside of the regu
lar class room. Dean Baker
said, "that a more thorough un
derstanding of other people and
their business and political rela
tions to us will be the most ef
fective step toward bringing
world peace."
Next Thursday night, Feb. 24,
Professor Gannet of Harvard
will address the club in the
chapel. Professor Gannet is a
s)eaker of wide reputation. He
comes to the University under
the uspices of the American As
sociation for International Con
ciliation.
The publi(' is invited. It is
urged that all students be pres
ent.

LARGE CROWD HEARD
DR. JOHN A. SNELL
Miss Boineau Sang at Y. M.
C. A. Meeting.
Travelling Secretary of Stu
dents' Volunteer Movement
Spoke at Flinn Hall.
Dr. John A Snell, travelling
secretary of the Students' Vol
unteer Movement, spoke to a
large audience of Carolina stu
dents at Flinn Hall, Monday
evening, Feb. 7, on "Practicing
medecine in the Far East."
Dr. Snell has lately returned
from Soochow, China, where for
several years he was at the head
of an American Missionary Hos
pital and is now engaged in the
work of visiting and speaking to
students in this country.
Much of the lecture was taken
up in giving facts concerning the
general conditions of health and
sanitation in China, particularly
in Soochow where the speaker
had given personal and close at
tention. He said the Chinese
were not acquainted with the
first principles and methods of
sanitation, and expressed him
self as being surprised at the
people surviving against such
unhealthful conditions.
The speaker told something of
the Chinese medicine men, or
doctors. The doctors, like the
people in general, are ignorant
as to laws of health and medi
cine. Dr. Snell said they depend
upon superstition and "trick
cure" to a large extent; howev
er, they have medical books and
use methods in practicing, but
their books and methods exhibit
such gross ignorance that it
would be amusing to those who
know better but for the dread
ful consequences that follow to
the people who are dependentl
opon these means for their med
ical aid.
In closing, Dr. Snell gave an
outline of the opportunities offer
ed in the far East to men in the
medical profession, who have
had the advantage of scientific
training.
Just before the lecture the au
dience was favored with a solo
by Miss Minnie Boineau, accom
panied by Mrs. Sommers. The
singing added much to the pro
gram,. andl was a large factor in
making the meeting altogether
one of the best held in Flinin Hall
this year.
