LXW DEPARTMENT I "Ignorantia legis neminen excusat" Moot Court. The Moot Court convened Thursday night, with the case of State vs Jones first on docket. Jones was indicted for the murder of Richard Williams. The murder is alleged to have hap pened on the corner of Main and I Lady streets, after a difficulty which took place in the lobby of the Columbia Theater. The de fendant, having left Richard Wil liams in the lobby, proceeded down Main Street to his place of business, but later was followed by Williams. Jones and Williams again met and another fight fol lowed, in which Richard Williams was killed by a blow over the head. Self defense was set up by Jones. "Chancellor" Stans field presided as judge. The State was represented by Messrs. Felder, Davis and Jennings, and the defendant by Messrs. McCoy, Sanders and DeTreville. The witnesses having been thoroly examined, Judge Stans field charged the jury with lengthy and forcible instructions. The jury remained out only a few minutes and returned a ver diet in favor of the defendant. The Law Association expressed its gratitude to - "Chancellor" Stansfield for fulfilling the posi tion of judge so thoroly. The Association is, indeed, fortunate to have one among its own mem bers so versed in the principles of law and the mandates of jus tice to fill the empty bench. Secretary Moerner Here. Mr. 0. W. Moerner, Southern Field Secretary of the I. P. A was on the campus last week. While here he meet the officers of the local "Dry" Club and went over with them the work of the year, outlining plans and making suggestions. He especially ur ged that the membership be increased and the "pep pot" kept boiling. Mr. Moerner ad dressed the students at the chapel hour Thursday morning. Mr. Moerner was in Columbia for the purpose of organizing member clubs of the I. P. A. at Columbia and Chicora colleges, the I. P. A. having decided todo women's work in South Carolina thisM year. .James M. Green, Jr., for sev ral sessions a student at the niversity, was married in Ashe ille, July 29, to Miss Annie Nor umn Barton. The following old letter - was found by the editor while browsing thru some old Clario sophic Society records. It seems to have been addressed to a com mittee of students of the first University who had drawn up resolutions upon Prof. LeCont's decision to leave the Univer sity. Prof. LeConte and his brother Joseph occupied a high station in the scientific world in . their day, and left a lasting im press upon Carolina. LeConte College is named after them. The letter follows: University of So. Ca., Columbia, So. Ca., - Feb. 23rd, 186911 Messrs. Geo. Howe, Jr. A. L. Miller T. C. Gaston 1 Committee of the students of the "Univer sity of South Carolina." Gentlemen: I am in receipt of your communication of the 22nd inst. covering the "Preamble and Resolutions" of the students of the University of South Carolina. Please convey to the students I of the University my most sin-, cere acknowledgements for the C handsome and touching terms, in which they have noticed my E approaching departure from the State and the scenes of my labors in this Institution. Be assured that no one can regret more deep ly than I do the necessity which compels me to sever my connec tions with an Institution to which my association with Officers and Students have been no less pleasant than honorable. The sentiment of esteem and sympa thy contained in the rasolutions have moved the deep fountains of the heart. Such manifesta tions of the ennobling qualities of humanity in our educated young men, constitute at the same time, the reward of your - instructions, and the crowning glory of your "Alma Mater." I, shall always cherish them as evi dence of the higher and nobler nature which has been vouchsaf ad to men.
