To see the Gamecocks greet Winthrop one would know they are sister institutions. 0 - I GOODBYE! With this issue of the Bird we lay aside our pens. We say all pleasant things that our prede cessors have said. Nothing can be added. We really feel that ve are losing a treasure. It breaks our hearts to tear away from that which is so dear to us. Mr. Editor, we salute you. WINTHROP D)r. D). B. Johnson and the \Vinthrop faculty have won the heartiest feeling of friendship from the Carolina sudennt body. The Gamecocks feel that the tie has been strengthened; that the institutions are nearer each other. President Johnson accepted, for the faculty and student body an iuvitation to be the guests of the University at the Carolina-David son game. We regret the occur rence of the unfortunate circum stances which caused the cancel lation of the contest. We trust that the Gamecocks will have the pleasure at another time of en tertaining their sister in Atitution. Winthrop is a very generous college. Her halls are thrown open for many collegiate activi ties. The attendance at the State contest held at Winthrop is rec ord- breaking each year. We salute Winthrop as the best girls' school in the State, and perhaps in the South. The Game cocks were pleased that the girls came to the fair and hope that they will come every year. The students remember with a great deal of pleasure the royal treat ment accorded at the contest. DAVIDSON FORFEITED Davidson waited until the last minute before our game with them to make certain unreason able and unjustifiable requests, which, if not granted, would re suilt in cancellation of the game on Friday. Davidson had every fact upon which they based their requests two weeks before the game. A ftter the contest had been widely advertised and had attracted many people to the capital city, the Presbyterians forfeited the game. The Carolina Student body is thoroughly indignant at the ac tion of the North Carolina school. The cancellation has perhaps severed all athletic relations be tween the two institutions. The incident is most unfortu nate for Davidson. She ac knowledged defeat and disap pointed hundreds of her alumni. She is going to meet with con siderable embarrassment in her athletic events. There were hundreds of people in Columbia who stayed over, or came into the city, to see the contest. Some of Davidson's own alumni are harsh in their criticisms of the unfortunate occurrence. Winthrop College faculty and student body had accepted an invitation to be Carolina's guests at the Davidson game. Blush ingly we had to say there would be no meet. There ap)pears to be; the lack of moral support to~ carry ota written agreement. W. J. Scott, ,J. S. Edmunds, H. Ji. W. Kizer, members of the academic class '15, were at the; Clemson game. School of Arts and Science, with various courses of study in Languages, History, Science, etc., leading to the degrees of A. B. and B. S. Eight General Scholarships worth from $100 to $150 each. II. School of Education, which seeks to prepare persons to serve the State as teachers, principals and superin tendents of schools. In this course the A. B. is the degree conferred. 11. Graduate School, with advanced courses leading to the degree of Master of Arts. Graduates of the colleges of South Carolina are admitted to the University in all courses except Law, without charge for tuition. IV. School of Engineering, Civil and Electrical, leading to C.
