EUPHRADIAN SOCIETY AWARDS MEDALS Turtletaub and Featheritone Won First Places. The annual Euphradian intra declaimers and debaters contest was held in the society hall Monday night before a large crowd. S. D Tirtletaub of the sophomore. class was selected as the best declaimer. The winner's subject was "The Great Fact of Life." Turtletaub has been a live wire in sooiety work for two years, and deserves special cred it for his appearance. The con test was open to freshmen and sophomore members of the so ciety. The other contestants were McGill, Bates, C. D. Brear ley and Collier. D. S. Polier of the junior class won first place last year. The debate also took place Monday night.' J. Douglas Featherstone a member of the junior law class won first place. Featherstone is recognized as one of the best debaters at Caro lina, and it is to men like him that she is looking to hold up the reputation of her oratory in the future. The debate was open to juniors and seniors. Sol omon Blatt and Demos Jones spoke on the affirmative while J. D. Featherstone and D. S. Polier were on the negative. The query was Resolved, That the United States should immed iately enter upon a program for the more rapid increase of her armament. The negative won the decision. This is a query that is being very widely dis-' cussed and the debaters handled the subject well. The winner gets a gold medal bearing the insignia of the Euphradian So ciety. Mr. Schwartz of the sen ior law class won the medal last year. The judges were F. W. Cappelman, "Pat" Murphy and John Cooper. L. W. Weeks acted as chief marshal. Brooks Gets Fellowship. J. F. Brooks, A. B. '14, was on the campus the first part of week. He has been teaching at Cartersville in Florence County, Brooks made a record in the classics and philosopy while at Carolina, and as a result of his study has been awarded a fel lowship at Clark University. He will begin work there in Sep tember. Sam Schneider, of the same class, held a fellowship during the past session. 0. K. McDaniel, A. B. '14, who was principal of the Inmian High School during the sdhool year, was visiting his friends on the campus the first of the week. Everybody remembers McDaniel for his happy smile and clever disposition. He will teach again next year. CROW AND SMITH RECEIVE HONORS Clariosophic Society Awards Two Medals. The Clariosophic intra-society declaimer's and debater's con. test was held last Monday even ing in the Clariosophic hall. Among the declaimers, K. D. Smith was awarded first place and G. M. S. Roof second. Mr. Smith's subject was "Victor Hugo's Invective Against Louis Bonaparte," and "The Trial of Stephen Ravenel" was Mr. Roof's subject. H. C. James, H. D. Steadman, and J. S. Schneider were the other de claimers. The first speaker is a freshmen. He has done good work in his society and is ex pected to be a good speaker. The debate, Resolved, That there should be two strong polit ical- parties in South Carolina was strongly debated by J. A. Tolbert, 0. F. Crow, W. J. Scott, and U. L. Rast, the former two upholding the affirmative and the latter two the negative. The affirmative side won, Mr. Crow receiving first honor and Mr. Tolbert second. Crow has won all three medals offered by his society, having won the de claimers medal in his freshman year. He is a member of the junior academic class and is president af the Clariosophic So ciety. He has had many honors and is expected to taka an active part in debating next year. The debater's medal was won last year by H. 0. Hanna, and the declaimer's medal went to E. S. Gambrell. The first is a fifteen dollar medal and the se cond is worth ten dollars. It is a great honor to carry off one of these medals in the defeat of the strong competition that accom panies each contest. Societies Give Smoker. Tonight the Euphradians and Clariosophics will convene for their final meetings after a most succesful session in active liter ary work. The annual smoker will be tendered and the seniors will make'their farewell address es to their respective societies. It is hoped that all members will be present to enjoy the evening in smoking and ad dresses by the seniors. The last meeting of the societies is usual ly very interesting .A fter a brief and important business session formalities will be laid aside. Prof. Patter-son Wardlaw went to Inniain the first' of the week to addr.ess tbe graduating class of the high school. J. 0. Allen, an'- alumnus of the Uni versity, is superintendent of the school, and 0. K. McDaniel, of the clas of '14, is principal.
