BEN GREE:; i-n... THREE AUDIENCES Athletic Association Realizes Fair Amount From Receipts. During the past week the stage loving people of Columbia were highly entertained by three open air performances of the t Ben Greet Woodland Players.: The first appearance was Tues day evening on Gibbes' Green, when "The Taming of the Shrew" was presented. "Twelfth Night" was given Wednesday afternoon, and "As You Like It" in the evening. The players were unsupported by any mechanical devices and depended solely upon their skill. There was no front curtain with woodland scenes painted on it as there usually is. There was just a plain background of trees and shrubbery. A peculiar tact about the plays is that not a line has been changed from the way it was acted in the seventeenth cen tury. Mr. Greet has time and agtin been congratulated on leav ing these plays just as they orig inally were, and not attempting to improve upon the great mas ter. One of the main features of each performance was the part played by Miss Elsie Herndon Kearns. She made quite a hit with all those who saw her per form. The cast also includes George Somne3, Henry Calver, George Kare, Raymond Bramley, Thomas Kelly, Clarissa Selwyne, and Suzette Gordon, all of whom are famous stage performers. The Ben Greet players had a well pleased audience. Every body left the grounds feeling that he had been more than re paid for his time and money. Among the pleasing features of the occasion, two stand out pre eminently. One was the care ful habit of speech. Everyone in the audience could hear very distinctly every word that was said, and even "those on the out side" could hear. The main feature was the success of the company in preserving the gay feeling and the fresh woodland sentiment. It will be remembered that a certain per centum of the gate receipts were to go into the treas ury of the Athletic Association. There were not the crowds pres ent as expected, and the sum re alized was not as large as it snould have been. However, the association probably realized be tween forty and fifty dollars clear profit. S. C. Wallace left Thursday for a short stay at Eagle Lake, Florida. 0. W. Pitts is out of Columbia Hospital after a slig-ht operation. rOPULAR LECTURE WEDNESDAY NIGHT Mr. J. E. McDougall on "From Ocean to Ocean." Mr. J. E. McDougall of the Bureau of Commercial Econom ics will give a popular lecture in the University chapel next Wed nesday evening at eight o'clock. The subject of his address will be "From Ocean to Ocean Across the Rockies." The lecture will be illustrated by moving pic tures and many colored slides. His lecture will present Ameri ca as it is today. Mr. McDougall is a noted lec turer on Canada, having lived there for a great many years. He has an intimate knowledge of the country, and is lecturing in the majority of the universi ties of the country, before busi ness men's organizations and hcrnhsrsa of commerce. The ad-; mission will be free. A large crowd is expected to hear Mr. McDougall.
