The engineering students were
t tunate in having Dr. L. I.
' v es, of the. Office of Public
Roads, to deliver a series of four
lectures on road constuction
and management. His first lec
ture-was on "Bituminous Mater
ials in 'Road COnstruction and
""Maintenanee." This was-a very
interesting lecture giving the
history of the development of the
use:of bituminous material since
the advent Of the automobile.
The second, "Public Borrow
ing for Highways," was most
interesting. He showed that
the' average community. could
economically pay $9,000 per mile
e for permanent improvements.
The third. ard fourth lectures
0~ dealt with the different systems
of iaintenance of the patrol sys
tem.
Last week Mr. C. C. Whitta
ker gave the engineers a lecture
-: on reinforced concrete. He
c showed the use of reinforced
concrete in all types of construe
tion, especially of bridges.
Y. M. C. A. NEWS
Sec. King for the second time
favored the Y. M. C. A. with
an illustrated lecture. The sec
ond was similar. to the one de
livered on China . the previous
meeting. The brilliant and rap
.1 commercial and industrial
growth of the 'little yellow peo
ple' since the doors of progress
were opened for them by Com
modore Perry was depicted in
striking colors on the screen. The
interlocking influence of Christi
anity was emphasized - along
with this growth. The conditions
of the Japanese children in the
mission schools with their .. new
freedom, such as free unbound
feet, saner customs, and oppor
tunity for common happiness
an3 enlightment"" were contrast
ed with their, previous miserable
conditions and cruel customs.
One of the striking features
brought out was the wonderful
amount of good that has been
accomplished thru the effective
work of the medical mission
aries. A wonderful field for
real service is open here. Thous
ands of these yellow people go
to their death thru the pitiful
ignorance of their supposed
doctors, who with -long needles
pretend to run the evil spirits
out of the body thru their hel
lish means of torture..
Mr. King merits much credit
for procuring these interesting
slides and talks. Only a small
audience was present Wednesday
evening due to the parade
that celebrated the victory over
~Wideon.
