CO-ED DEPARTMENT Editor, Miss Pearl Price. The -Co-eds would have felt honored had they had the op.. tportunity of setting the first, black finger in the fence build ing. The co-eds regretted very much to hear of the Illness of Mr. Luke Hill, president of the student body. They wish for him a speedy recovery. The co-eds were well repre sented at the State Primary held in the chapel Monday evening. They ithoroughly -enjoyed - the able speeches made by the con testants. When looking over the audience, they were made to wonder where the college spirit of the "eds" was, who so readily Lcriticize the co-eds for lack of it. a> d At a meeting of the co-ed or ganization on last Wednesday ,j two committees were appointed. The first consisting of Misses 1 Ayer, Becker, Brandenburg and ~ Hudgens, to get up the co-ed de -. partment in the annual. The 2 second consisted of Misses * Love, Ayer and Covington to write up the seniors. The women students of 1914-15 are planning to form an alumnae association during commence ment week. Letters are being sent to all alumiae, informing them of the plan, and asking their cooperation. It is hoped there will be a hearty response to these. Nothing contributes more to the upbuilding of a col lege than live alumni and alum nae associations. If the -older women students will rally to the plans of their younger sisters this can be made a strong associ ation. INFIRMARY NEWS Dan Crider is recovering rap idly. He is now recuperating at the infirmary. J. R. Rollins was operated on Sunday for appendicitis. His operation was light and he is on the road to recovery. Luke Hill is about well and will soon be permitted to leave the infirmary. Those who were confined in the infirmary last week were Purdy, Jones, Green, McLeod, Darby. All had slight attacks of lagrippe. We have had the fence on the brain for some time but we will soon have it on the athletic field. 'DRY" CLUB GIVES FIRST PROGRAM Ep*orth =44Eare Speakers on Ptohibition. The prohibition -club n which was organized among the stud ents two weeks ago gave its first public appearance last Sunday night 'before the Epworth Lea gue of the Washington St. Meth odist Church. The following pro gram was rendered: H. 0. Hanna told in a few words the purpose of the club and introduced J. McB. - Dabbs, cwho gave the scope of the work and the mag nitude of the inter-collegiate or ganization. L. B. Harrison pninted out briefly afew reasons why South Carolina should have a prohibition law. The last speaker was W. J., Scott, who told how the young peoples' church organizations could fur ther the Cause. He made a very earnest appeAL to the young peo ple of the Epworth League to lend their cooperation to the prohibition movement. Because of the short notice and the fact that the program committee had not had a meet ing, the talks were necessarily short. It is the purpose and hope of the organization to make a number of appearances at the churches, schools and Y. M. C. As. The object of these meet ings is to create sentiment in favor of State-wide prohibition in September. TRUSTEES APPRO PRIATE FOR GYM Part of Old Plans Will be Car ried Out. At the last meeting of the board of trustees a little over two hundred dollars were appropri ated for gymnasium equipment. This will be expended for appa ratus needed in individual exer cise only. An anthropometric and measuring machine and a corrective equipment will be bought, and, also, a few mats and chest weights. Some years ago elaborate plans were laid out for the equipment of the gymnasium. The whole basement was to be tiled, a swimming pool was to have been installed, dressing rooms were, also, to have been built. Individual lockers were other equipments included. Upstairs a running track was? thaebeen constructed over head and used as a gallery when~ contests were played. But this never got any further than the plans, so the director has to de pend entirely on games for exer cise in his classes. However,, Carolina has a fine gymnasium' building and it is hoped that theI day will come when it will bel finely or at least adequatelyI equipned.
