LAW DEPARTMENT
M. R. Reese, Editor
On account of lack of time for
preparing a case this week the
Moot Court was postponed until
Thursday night of next week.
All members of the Association
are urged to attend at that time
as the case is expected to be a
very interesting one of original ju
risdiction. The attorneys for the
State are to be Carey and Burnett
while those for the defendant
are Passailaigue and Crymes.
The junior examination marks
were posted last Wednesday and
from all appearances most of the
juniors passed for the first time
with a second. The seniors are
still patiently waiting for the
winning or losing scores to be
announced.
The members of both classes
of the Law school regret very
much that Prof. J. N. Frierson
has been confined to his room
this week on account of sickness.
THORNWELL WILL BE
HEATED BY STEAM
Architects Say Money is Not
Sufficient to Heat LeConte.
Steps are being taken for the
extension of the heating system
to Thornwell college. Messrs.
Wilson & Sompayrac, the college
architects, were on the campus
Wednesday estimating the cost
of the extension proposed.
They have found that $12,500
is not sufficient for properly heat
ing LeConte college. Although
it is sufficient for the heating of
the building, it will not provide
for a regulating and ventilating
system.
Mr. Wilson is to make his re
port next Thursday to the board
of trustees, which is to meet
then to decide in what way the
extension is to be made. It has
been proposed that the appropri
ation be used for the heating of
Thornwell. As this appropriation
is sufficient to heat Thornwell
college, it is very probable that
this college will be heated. If
so, Flinn Hall and the Library
may be heated also, since the
steam main will return that way.
The work is to be begun as
soon as the board of trustees
takes action. The extension of
the heating system will be a
great improvement at Carolina
for it points to the time when all
the old buildings will be steam
heated and the danger of fires
will be removed. Also the build
ings will be cleaner, in that coal
will not have to be kept in the
rooms.
The new system will certainly
be ready for the 1915-16 session.
J. C. Fort is spending the
week-end at Gaffney. It is ru
mored that he is out on a "dear"
hunt.
WORK ON FENCE TO
BEGIN IN ONE WEEK
Preliminary Work is Being Com
pleted-Bleachers Will be
Movable.
No definite plans for the con
struction of the grandstand and
fence have as yet been made,
since nothing can be decided un
til the trustees meet on March 11.
The work will be begun almost
immediately afterwards. The po
sition of every post for the fence
has already been staked out by
the engineering students and the
digging of post holes may be be
gun at any time. If the students
do their work from the start
much time will be saved and the
fence will be ready for the La
fayette series March 22. Already
several unofficial contracts have
been handed in, and others are
expected. It is the intention of
the committee to try to get the
contractors to do all the work for
the $2,500. At most the stu
dents will only have to nail on
the boards.
According to the plans which
have already been completed, the
grandstand will have a seating
capacity of 1200, and the two
bleachers 400 each. These will
not be stationary, but may be
moved to any position on the field.
This will allow the students to
sit on the opposite side of the
football field from thegrandstand.
The frame of the bleachers will
be put together with bolts and
only the planks will be nailed.
The field will be extended 100
feet in the direction of the in
firmary. The track will most
likely be enlarged to the extent
of the riew field.
CIVIC CLUB BANQUETS
NEXT MONDAY NIGHT
Jefferson Hotel Will be Scene of
Action-List of Speakers.
The annual banquet of the
Civic Club will be given at the
Jefferson Hotel Monday evening
at 8:30 o'clock. This is one of
the smartest affairs of the sea
son, and the committee, consist
ing of Messrs. Danner, Gambrell
and Hanna, has perfected plans
that will make this one conform
to the usual high. standard of
'celebration'.
A delightful menu has been
arranged. The following pro
gram will be carried out:
Prof. Rucker, Toastmaster; H.
0. Hanna, "The Significance of
the Civic Club"; J. S. McInnes,
"The Civic Club Applied"; A. E.
Merrimon, "The College Man in
Politics"; Dr. Josiah Morse,
