Bruce Coleman is overseeing the installation of a iadio-telegraph receiving. station at LeConte college. With this instrument wireless messages from Arlington station and ves sels not far off the Atlantic coast of SouthCarolina can be received. Anyone who understands the telegraph code may take these messages. The time flashes from Washington will be taken daily. This instrument may be tuned so as to receive many messages. When the aerials have been erect ed and the connection made the messages may be taken. A transmitting outfit is not only expensive but requires a licensed operator under the federal law. The instrument is being in stalled in connection with the department of Physics, and in struction will be geven along this line. The instrument is very simple. CAROLINA LOSES TO NEWBERRY COLLEGE Fastest Game of the Season Lost by Score of 39-23. One of the fastest and snappi est basketball games of the year was that played by Carolina and Newberry College at Newberry Wednesday night. Carolina went -into the game with the determi nation to make up for the loss she suffered at the hands of the Lutherans last week, but the first half ended with the score standing 23 to 9 against the Gamecocks. Realizing that the tug of war had come, Carolina entered the second half more spirited than before, with the result of a score of 39 to 23 against her. Newberry had to abandon her accustomed advantage of passing and resort to throwing from whatever position she might have. Bowen, as usual, starred for Carolina. Baker of New berry made some plays that were above the average. Ashbaugh also played well for the Luther ans. The lineup: Carolina. Newberry. Next Friday night Carolirfs will meet the Clemson Tigei al basketball in the final game of the season. The game will be played on the home floor, com mencing promptly at 8:3( o'clock. There has always been greal rivalry between these two insti tutions in all branches of ath letics. Last year the Game cocks triumphed over the Clem son five after a close and hard fought battle. This year the Tigers come with renewed energy to claw the Gamecock, and Carolina is anxious to repeal last year's performance. Con sequently there is going to -b s royal battle when these two old time rivals meet next Friday night. WAKE FOREST WINS BASKETBALL GAME Baptists Win in Walk Over froni University Team. Last Saturday night in the gymnasium Wake Forest defeat ed Carolina 64 to 11. Great team work, combined with ex cellent goal shooting from al most any angle, was too muc for the Gamecocks. The Baptiste worked together like a machine, there being always a man pre sent to toss the ball thru the coveted basket. Carolina scored first, but Wake Forest soon tied up. The visi tors then began terrific work, the score being 34 to 4 at the end of the first half. In the second half the visitors con tinued their good work, and the game ended with the score 64 tc 11 in favor of the Baptists. Holding, Carrick and Hall did the best work for Wake Forest. For Carolina, Danner did well. The lineup follows: Wake Forest-Holding, Hall (Bean) forwards; Carrick (Frank) centre; Hensley, Davis (Whitehurst, Bean) guards. Carolina-Talley, Bowen, for. wards; Farrell, centre; Waring, Danner, guards. Mid-Winter Reception. The student body reception, which was scheduled for last Friday night, has been postponed to. Monday evening. .That the Social Cabinet, instead of ap pointing a special committee, will take charge of the reception themselves is indicative of the fact that this will be the best so cial affair of the whole season. The change is due to the fact that the College For Women and Columbia College could not at. tend on Friday night. Both col leges will be present Monday nig-ht.
