The students do not know
what they miss when they do
rot attend the public lectures
riven in the chapel and LeConte
:ollege. Dr. Venable's address
was a masterpiece, yet very few
students were out to hear him.
When we settle in our little coun
try homes we will not be able to
hear such addresses. Let us
have a larger audience at the
next lecture and the next oratori
:al contest or debate.
THAT ORATION.
The State Oratorical prelimin
ary will be held during the first
part of March. Carolina won
first place two years ago, and it
is her time to come back this
year and win again. One college
in this State boasts of having
won first place four times out of
the last five contests, and of
having won second place that
year. indeed, that institution
no longer speaks of the meeting
at Rock Hill as a "contest."
They call it a "cinch," and they
have a right to do so. Men of
Carolina should wake up and put
forth their every effort to win
the contest this year. If you
Jo not think you have a chance
to win, get busy and make the
man that does win put forth his
every effort. Then if you lose,
you have not lost the fight. You
have made a better speaker out
Df yourself and you have made
a better speaker out of the man
who does win. You have caus
ed the winner to wake up and
make a better speaker out of
himself, and, further, increasing
Carolina's chances to win. The
men who are good orators owe it
to the University to spend a
little more time on their orations,
tho now the orations be far bet
ter than we -an do. An extra
touch or a few extra practices
may win the contest for you.
We are in it to win this year.
Let the whole student body co
raperate by going to Rock Hill
nn April 30, to see Carolina
bring home first place in the S.
C. I. 0. contest.
