CLUB STARTS WORK
Steady Practice Will Be Held
From Now On.
The first practice of the Uni
versity Glee Club was held in
the chapel Monday night.
The new men were given a try
out and many good voices were
found among them. The music
which will be used this season.

which is used in the second part
of the program, is expected to
arrive from the Witmark Pub
lishing Hou: e in a few days.
When this n us'c arrives practice
will begin in e irnest.
11'anager (a -penter states that
the first concert of the season
will be given in Camden so that
the new men will have a chance
to show their musical and his
tonic ability before the big con
cert which will, as usual, be given
in the chapel.
Mr. Shelby, the musical direc
tor for the past two years, will
again direct the Club. He
has shown marked ability in this
line and the Club is indeed
fortunate in securing his servi
ces again.
T1he members of the Glee Club
this year will be new almost in.
entirety. Dick Reeves and many
others will be missed.

TRUSTEES ASSESS FOR
LITERARY CONTESTS
An Extra Fee of 50 Cents will
be Paid Each Term.
All students of the University
will now have to pay fifty cen
at the treasurer's office as literary
contest fee, which will be paid
at the first of each term according
to action taken by the Board of
Trustees. No student is exemp
ted from the charge, but the dol
lar for the whole year will be I
credited to the members of the
literary societies. So, as is seen,
this will in no way increase so
ciety fees, but will get from
each student, whether society
member or not, the fee of fifty
cents, which will go to defray
the expense of the intercollegiate
contests.
This matter was taken up last
year when a committee com
posed of the presidents and
treasurers of the societies
went before the Trustees, but
nothing came of this effort.
This year the Debating Council
took the proposition in hand, and
appointed Messrs. Scott an<}
Danner to go before the Finance
Committee, who in turn pre
sented the question to the!
Board of Trustees with the result
stated above.
This fee is expected to make
society finances an easy matter
in the future. The student
body gets all the crtdit for lit
erary work done by the societies,
and it is nothing but proper that
the student body should have a
share in defraying the expense.
Of course, the first fee will not
begin until next September.
Professors Away.
The Faculty of the University
are still very busy making ad
dresses over the State. Dr.
Currell spoke yesterday to the
school and public of Prosperity.
Tomorrow he will address the
Sons of the Revolution at Char
leston. The Woman's Club of
St.. Mathews will be his audience
on Tuesday.
Prof. Wardlaw spoke before
the County Teacher's Associa
tion of Clarendon County at
Manning last Saturday.
Wofford's New Weekly.
Wofford College has just issu
e~d the initial number of "The
01(d Gold and Black'', her weekly
newspaper. This is one of the
three weekly college papers in.
South Carolina. The Gamecock
and The Tiger are well known in
the newspaper as well as foot-;
b'all circles. The Gamecock
wishes to congratulate Wofford
