CO-ED DEPARTMENT
Miss Frornberg, Editor
Summer.,as goe .but will re
tunn next year.
Gym. was certainly rough with
the ladies this-week.
Miss Summer is teaching at
Hampton and is quite satisfied
with her position.
Miss Thain haa.been unable to
attend college, duties lately on
account of the severe illness of
her mother.
The varsity girls met Wednes
day morning and decided to get
college pins as the Jniversity
emblem, to be worn by every co
ed. A committee, consisting of'
one member from each class, has
been appointed to select a design.
ATHLETIC- MANAGERS .
ARE ELECTED
Danner And Gambrell To Have
Ckarge Of 'Football And
Track Teams.
At a meeting of the Advisory
board Monday afternoon, H. E.
Danner of Beaufort was elected
manager of the varsity football
team for the 1915 season. Mr.
Danner managed the basketball
team successfully last year, and
was assistant football manager
one year ago. The football
team is to be congratulated on
seuring such a capable man.
E. S. Gambrell was elected
manager of the -varsity track
team. So far the managers have
not been able to arrange track
meets, but Mr. Gambrell hopes
to have several. He has already
received letters from two col
leges in Virginia in regard to
track meets next year.
No Society Dec. 12.
It was decided in both the
Clariosophic and Euphradian
literary societies several weeks
ago there should be no meeting of
the societies on the evening of
December 12. The reason for
having no meeting on this night
is that'the. Y. M. C. A. is going
to hold a series of lectures from
December 10 to 13, one of the
most -'important of these ad
dresses coming on the 12th.
So, the societies thought it best
to do away with the regular
meeting on this evening, and
to let the members be free to
attend this lecture.
Two Weeks Holiday.
Many of the,students -are re
joicing because they are to get

-REGULAR BASKETBALL
PRACTICE HAS BEGU
Goal Tossers,.Oult cto :Hokdithe
State Championship.
Coach Blackburn called out
the basketball-squad for regular
practice .at the gym. Monday af
ternoon at five o'cl6ck. ' Quite a
number.of men have been.work
ing out regularly for the past.two
or three weeks, but Monday af
ternoon every candidate for the
team was on the floor and, this
season's.work. commenced.- For
two years the Gamecocks have
held ._the . championship.. of .the
state, and this season a desperate
effort will be made to maintain
Carolinais spotless recordt
Most of last year's varsity men
are out to defend their jobs
against all comers.- Some of
the new material already seen in
action will doubtless push the old
heads for places on the team. It
is rumored that anumberof fo->t
ball men will this year stretch
the scope of their athletic prowess
and invade the world of basket
ball. These big fellows fresh
from scrimmages and forward
passes will make somebody get a
move on to beat them out for
places on the varsity squad.
Of last year's varsity, Farrell,
Brooker,. Stoney, and Danner are.
back for this year's season.
Good material has. already
shown up in the small squad
that has been out for the last
few weeks and when this was
swollen by Monday's new comers
Coach Blackburn has a very
wide field from which to pick
this season's guards, forwards
and centers. In an interview, he
said: - "We are very anxious to
see on that floor every man who
has ever played basketball, ever
seen a basketball game or
a basketball--and any body else
who will come out. for practice."
Dr. Green Gave Reception
The reception recently given
by Dr. Green to his Latin and
Greek classes was one of the
most enjoyable social affairs of
the season. Dr. Dreen's hospit
able home in Shandon Annex
was thrown open for the enter
tainment of his second-and third
Latin and his third Greek stu
dents. Since Shandon .Annex's
most charming young ladies were
prese*nt, together with the fact
that delicious refreshments were
served, everyone .present spent
an enjoyable evening and realized
the truth of the proverb, "every
cloud has a silver lining, " in that
the taking of Greek and *Latin
is accompanied by such pleasant
occasions.
