"In Getting Under-Way" He Says Cut all Weights and Run Race With Patience. At the regular Y. M. C. A. meeting Wednesday evening, Mr. Montgomery of the Presby terian Seminary gave the weekly address. Mr. Montgomery took as the central thought of his re marks, "Getting Under-Way." All the old men may remember that Mr. Montgomery took some studies at the University last year in addition to his Seminary work, and in this way the speak er was no stran,ger among us. Mr. Montgon ery l'ed his re marks on: "Therefore let us also, seeing we are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnes ses, lay aside every weight., and the sin which doth so easily be set us, and let us run with pa tience the race that is before us, looking unto J. sus, the author and perfectEr o ' cur "a'th." The speaker said that this is a part of a message written by the great apostle, St. Paul, to the Hebrews. "In this nressage St. Paul compares the Christain life to a race, " said the speaker. The great apostle was a student of the life of his time and so he drew this comie lriscfn from hav ing seen runners in t.he arena and elsewhere. Mr. Montgomery said further that there is no group of ;men more tempted than college men. "But," said he, "even though we go down with sone tempta tion, even though we get dis coura4ged at times; let us con tinue the fight." The path has been marked cut for us. We have only to follow the example of Christ." On next Wednesday evening, Dr. Currell, president of the University, is to address the as ociation. We trust that there will be no vacant seats at this fneeting, as we feel sure we shall get something worth going for. Let each member bring another fellow along with him next Wednesday night. A freshman ups with the fol owing: who put lie in The Li >rary? Aw. murde him. UNIVERSITY SOCIAL CABINET ORGANIZED Five Student Body Members. Two From Faculty. A Series of Receptions and Dan ces Arranged to Suit-Fresh man Reception First. In accordance with a plan adopted last year by the student body and approved by the facul ty, the Student Body Social Cab net, consisting of a committee elected last year by the student body; will this year have charge of all events of a social nature given by the student body throughout the year. The cabi net consists of W. J. Scott, E. S. Gambrell, L. W. Hill, and S. L. Latimer, Jr. from the student body; and Dr. Josiah Morse and Prof. J. Bruce Coleman from the facuity. Mr. Latimer at a re cent meeting was elected presi dent and Mr. Colemen treasurer. The cabinet has already begun work, formulating plans for the annual freshman reception. It is hoped to have this in early October if possible. It will be staged in the gymnasium and attended by the students of the the College for Women and Co lumbia College. The new organization is mod eled after the athletic associa tion and its object is to give, at a moderate expense, a series of social affairs at which the whole student body will be present. It is dependent for its support, both financial and otherwise on the student body and contin uance is only possible with the consistent interest and help of the members of that body. Moot Court Assignment. The following case has been set for hearing next Thursday night October 8th. by Clerk of Court R. R. McLeod: State vs. John Friday, charged with murder. Appeal from the decision of the lower court, where the defendant was found guilty of murder. The object of the appeal is to have the sentence reduced to that of manslaughter. Messrs. LaGrone and Charles will represent the Defendant-Ap pellant and Messrs. Doyle and Fort will appear for the State Respr.ndent. Prof. Thomas will act as Chief Justice and Messrs. Adams and Webster as Associate Justices. The case is a very in teresting one and a full attend ance is desired. GAMECOCKS WIN OVER NAVY YARD LADS First Game of Season Goes to Carolina. Old Varsity Men in Good Form. New Material Shows up Well---Score 30 to 7. In the initial gridiron game of the season the Gamecock eleven snatched the colors from the squad of the Machinist Mate School, domiciled at the Charles ton Navy Yard. Carolina was victorious by no less than 30 to 7, the University bunch carrying the ball for four touchdowns and Marvin Porter's dependable toe placing a field goal between the posts. Coaches Edgerton and Costello worked two entire teams against the sailors, the scrubs going in in the third quarter. Both teams gave reason for many good hopes and encouragement for a trium phant year over the indomitable enemies that must be encount ered. The principle figures for Caro lina were M. Porter, Hill and Langston. Porter featuring by his vastly improved toe work; Hill and Langston by their end runs and line plunging. Crider showed up in fine form against the Navy, this being his first var sity game. Alex Pregnall, quar ter for the Navy, and a pigskin veteran, did stril:ing work, hand ling unusual and unexpected plays, many times plunging the line for 5 and 10 yard gains; also, he used the forward pass with a signal degree of success. Kar linski, the Navy captain, showed much sand and "pep" against the weighty and stunning lunges of Hill and "Big" Going. Carolina tallied the first score, Marvin Porter kicking a goal from placement. Ellzey carried the first touchdown through the western goal in the second quar ter, being made by gradual gains. M. Porter kicked goal. The sec ond touchdown was put across by a spectacular 30 yard dash by Hill and Porter failed at goal, making the score 16 to 0 at the end of the second quarter. The scrubs went on tl:e field when the whistle blew for the third quarter, and at the end the Navy had 7 points. The varsity: returned in the middle of the rourth quarter and held the sail ors until the end. But the fourth was marked by n cnpicnnna come-back of Cnro-. UNIVERSITY MEN WILL SEE MATINEE Waddy Anderson to Have Charge of Wire. Students Can Watch the Plays of Our Team on Other Fields. Football matinees will be held in the gymnasium this year just as they have been held in the past. Mr. Waddy Anderson, a student of experience in the football line will have them in charge. The usually admission of 25 cents will be charged. At these matinees full details of the games will be given. A blackboard mapped out as a ball field will be used to show the position of the players. Each play will be heard immediately. Every tackle, every dash, and every star play will be told of almost as soon as it happens. These matinees cannot possibly be a success unless the students support them both in sentiment and financially. It behooves every student to attend these matinees every time they are held. Varsity Elects Captain. Luke Hill was recently elected captain of Carolina's football team. The position is a respon sible one and ik is considered quite an honor to be elcted to it. Hill has the enviable record of having made a place on the var sity in his freshman year, and of holding it ever since. We feel that with such an all around man as Hill as captain of the team, Carolina is sure to have a succesful session. Officers of Athletic Board. In a student body meeting held last Saturday F. R. Hem mingway was elected as student body representative on the Ad visory Board. L. A. Langsston was elected president of ths Athletic Asso ciation and R. W.
