Y. M. C. A. HOLDS FIRST
i REGULAR MEETING
Dr. Reavis Deljvers Initial Ad
dress to Association
On Wednesday i evening the
University Y. M. C. A..held its
first meeting of the session.
This meeting was unuapally en
thusiastic and there was a large
attendance. It. is hoped that it
will have :as good or better at
tendance throughout the year.
The singing was conducted by
Mr. Whilden of the city Y. M. C.
A.
All who were present enjoyed
a treat in hearing Dr. Reavis,
who was the speaker of the
evening. Dr. Reavis took for
his subject, "Selling Out Cheap."
He said many men are doing as
did Esau of old; selling out
mighty cheap. Dr. Reavis .said
that college men have the follow
ing birthrights;
1. The, birthright of a good
name.
2. The birthright of physical
strength.
3. The birthright of an intel
lectual opportunity.
4. The birthright of moral
freedom.
5. The birthright of money.
6. The birthright of life.
"Do not sell out your birth
right here in Columbia," said
the speaker, "for you will seek
it carefully with tears, as did
Esau of old, but to no purpose.
He said further that college men
should not waste their opportuni
ties, but should make the most
of them and by all means hold
on to their birthright. "For,"
he said, "you can so quickly sell
out to the Devil if you do not
watch yourself. You should hold
to the precious heritages gotten
from old father and mother.
Hold on to therm; don't let the
devil buy you out."
After the benediction some of
the students signed the member
ship card. It is hoped that the
membership this year will over
lap those of previous years. Ed
ward S. King, the new associa
tion secretary, has taken charge
and he has already expressed his
.approval of and confidence in
the new cabinet.
A New Water Main.

In place of Sidney Cohen who
resigned his position as assistant
l f;ytprofessor, Stewart Dud
ley:has been chosen. Dudley is
by nQ means. a- stranger to the
UnivQrsity men.. He., graduated
in the class of 1913-14 with an A.
B. degree.. As a student, Dud
ley took part in all phases of
college life. He was an able
student, a strong athlete, a suc
cessful journalist,, and- a forceful
speaker. He has represented
Carolina in several debating con
tests with other colleges.
We all feel. assured. that Prof.
Dudley will make a success in
his new position.
A Decrease
The enrollment at the Univer
sity for the present year has
reached approximately four hun
dred and twenty. Students are
still comink in, and this number
is expected to be considerably
increased. Taking into consider
ation the conditions that now ex
ist over the state the enrollment
is very gratifying. One hundred
and fifty have registered for the
Freshman class. Seventy eight
have thus far enrolled in the
Law school.
