GONZALES ORATORICAL Preliminaries Friday and Finals Monday Night. Monday night will see the final oratorical contest of the year at the University. Six orators, three from each literary society, will struggle to win the Gonzales medal. Since 1908, Mr. Robert Gonzales has been offering a medal to the best student orator. There have always been numer ous students striving to win the medal, and the honor which vic tory in the Gonzales contest brings. Last year James Bran denburg, member of the Clario sophic society won first place. Owing to the number of men who desired to take part in the Gonzales contest and the fact that only six contestants are allowed in the finals, preliminaries were held in both societies last night. M. A. Wright will preside Monday night, E. S. Gambrell will be chief marshal, and his assistants will be R. B. Jennings, James Purdy, and B. G. Shuler. We hope that the students will realize that they should be out in full force, both to hear six good speeches, and to give the speak ers the encouragement due them. The Freshman. Draughon's Practic MORE GRADUATES Eleven Will Finish in Manual Training Department. There is one department in the University in which a great deal of splendid work is being done, altho many of the students are ignorant of its existence. It is the department of manual training, which was establised on the campus only last year. This deparment, consisting of a two year's course, will turn out its first graduates in June. There are eleven in the finishing class. The work these students have done is beyond the average. There will be eight beautifully finished morris chairs, two libra ry tables, several porch swings, hat racks, bookcases and a dav enport, when the session is ended for which the second year class receives credit. During com mencement week the work of both classes will be on exhibi tion in the shop. Prof. Cook, instructor in this department, is anxious for the students and visitors, especially the teachers, to see this exhibition of manual training arts. "Deacon" Webster has done more than anyone else in this department. He has been labor ing diligently on a complete library set. Among the exhi bits, Webster will have a mor ris chair, hat rack, library table, bookcase and davenport. The Modern Girl.
