DR. WAUCHOPE GIVES
IBSEN LECTURES
Tells Story of Great Norwegian
Dramatist.
On Thursday morning at the
regular meeting of the third Eng
lish class Dr. Wauchope began
his series of lectures on Henrik
Ibsen, the great Norwegian
dramatist. The subject of the
initial lecture was "Ibsen: The
Master Builder of the Modern
Drama. "
Dr. Wauchope went into de
tails to tell of the character of
Ibsen's dramas and their influ
ence on the public mind. He
pointed out the great influence
that the poet's mind underwent
-. when he ran away from Norway
and went into Italy. He spoke
. of his literary peculiarities and
. personal traits. He divided the
dramatist's work into three di
visions, the historical dramas,
the romantic dramas and the so
cial dramas, giving representa
c, tive plays under each division.
o In response to an extended in
a4 vitation several visitors were in
the class. These lectures are
open to anyone in the city who
may be interested.
Speaking of the lectures Dr.
Wauchope said: "I was indebted
to the performance of 'Peer
Gynt' and 'A Doll's House,' at
the Columbia theatre for my ini
tial personal interest in Ibsen,
the bekinning of a two years en
thusiastic study of William Ar
cher's translation'of plays. I can
not presume to the dignity of
calling myself a full-fledged Ib
senite, only an amateur in the
works of the greatest of the
modern playwrights. I propose
in these lectures only a brief in
troduction to Ibsen, a sort of a
short spring voyage into some of
the best charted fjords of the ti
tanic Norwegian genius."
Schwartz Wins Medal.
Raymon Schwartz, of Sumter,
won out in the Euphradian ora
torical contest held on Monday
night. The other contestants
were H. C. Brearly, who won
second place, and T. T. Carroll.
This is the first contest of its
kind ever held by the Euphra
dian society. The contest is
open to all the member3 of the
society except those who have
won medals in any other college.
This restriction is put upon the
contest because its main object
is to encourage the undeveloped
members to take part. Much en
thusiasm was shown by the con
testants.
H. R. Clinkscales, of the jun
ior law class, has been absent
several days on a tour through
the rural sections of his county,
looking after his political inter
ests.
Carolina Defeated
by V. M. I. Team
On Saturday, May 2, Virginia
Military Institute defeated Caro
lina by a score of 12 to 6. Our.
team was in bad form. Owing
to several peculiarities of the
field, a good many balls went for
hits which otherwise would have
been fielded. Because of the
sloping ground our fielders failed
to catch the ball at two different
times when a miss meant a home
run. Richards got three hits out
of four times up. Edens played
first well and got two hits out of
three times up.
Bicycle Hike.
At 3:45 Wednesday afternoon
the bicycle club met at the gym
nasium and rode over to Dents
ville, a distance of about eight
miles. The members of the club
are taking much interest in this
new kind of sport and much en
thusiasm exists in their camp.
All the fellows who have access
to bicycles are urged to come out
and join the club.
Dr. George A. Wadchope will
deliver two addresses May 19,
before the congregation of the
Presbyterian church of Clinton.
Herman S. Spahr, A. B. 1895,
