If these was a call for volun teers would Joe Bolt? Carolina has had Wake Forest some balled-up this spring. * * By the way, where will Harry Thaw when the world lets him go? I' * * The will in Wilson is sure put ting the hurt in Huerta nowa days. **: Coming down to baseball, Big Mills of Carolina- grinds slow, but he grinds exceedingly fine. It's not so much a question of who put the "punch" in Ehrlich, but of where so much has been getting to lately. ** * If pyramidal poetry is as last ing as the pyramids, the recent edition of the Carolinian will en dure through the ages. That old adage about watching a preacher's son still holds true: Johnnie Blackburn was going a little too fast about a week ago. In our opinion, fighting is too hot in the summer, too cold in the winter, and too blamed uncom-: fortable at this season of the year. We can stand for a good deal, but Lester Perkins' latest instru-. ment for the manufacture of noise makes a sound h little too much like bull for us. Just wait, and you will see what the University of South Carolina will say to the Univer sity of North Carolina in the next triangular debate. It is reported that the morn ing a fter the night before a cer tain fellow found his watch in the pitcher. "Oh, well," he re marked, "I often soak it." A committee of seniors in the University of Minnesota are sent out over the State to lecture on student life at the University. We wonder if they tell the whole thing. In announcing the May festi val held on the campus last week, the reporter concluded his ar ticle by announcing that 'crooks will be provided on the campus." We deny the charge most em phatically. A REFLECTION. The remarks of-the editor of The Carolinian relative to the two literary societies are well tak en. The situation is grave and there certainly should be some method for reviving the interest of students in the literary work of the societies. If there is such a thing as "pep" in athletics, and we believe there is, why could that same pursuader not be used in the literary sphere? The same old Carolina spirit that is so conspicuous on the athletic field should find itself in the society halls. The literary societies should be the strongest organizations on the campus. For it is in their halls that men are to be trained to represent Carolina in the ora torical and debating contests re cently become so numerous. It is in their halls that the strong est bonds of college friendship are to be found. We may for get those with whom we work mathematics and dig out Latin and Greek roots, but the literary society friendships will always be cherished in after years. The suggestions for reviving this interest and enthusiasm in society work made by The Caro linian are very good. There has been an atmosphere of vacancy about the halls, and a feeling of indifference in the members. By having regular social com mittees to provide by extra as sessment if necessary--for smokers and other social events, we agree that the interest of the students in literary society work would be stimulated. OUR SOCIAL SYSTEM. There are not a few fellows on the campus who neglect an important element in their edui cation, which is the social ele ment. It has heen our observa tion that a large percentage of the men do not attend the recep tons, smokers and other college social functions which happen on the campus. Generally, the bunch that takes part in this side of college life are those who do not need the training as bad ly as others who remain in their rooms or go up town to. the "movies.'' Such action on the part of a fraction of the students is just neither to the faculty or the Uni versity at large. The faculty kindly provides a social commit tee, the duties of which are to assist the students with the so cial side of their college activities. But the committee is powerless to act without the support of the student body. And we owe it as a matter of respect and ap preciation to the committee as well as to the college girls and other visitors to turn out in full force and to help make the thing a success. Now, we do not ad vise a student to lay aside his college work for every little so cial event that comes his way out in the ci'ty, but we do insist that there are men on the campus who do not often enough give themselves up to free social in tercourse with his fellow stud ents. Carolina is judged by the character of her student body. But if half the students refrain from taking part in the social functions, the windows that open upon the inner court of the insti tution, then the University will be judged by that attending fraction which may or may not be representative of the entire student body. In less than a week of Sun days commencement week will be upon us. This is always a week of social activities, and yet every year scores of freshmen and sophomores skip home im mediately after examinations. This is the very time when Caro lina should work out in full at tire and make a show. Let us not allow the college spirit to be smothered. Leti us bathe fre quently our hearts in the warmth of good fellowship. Ben Sawyer and Julian Bush, the only two inmates of the infir mary at this time, are rapidly re covering. Both expect to be out in a few days. The Lower Main Street Banke We offer you every accomo dation consistent with sound banking and will appreciate your account. Bruce Walker Ravenel, President; Win.
