Spring zephyrs and the odor of raw onions from the Mess Hall. The faculty sure made a hollow day of holiday last week. Should we fail in ethics in .June, would we have re--morse? With this issue the new staff makes its initial dip into journalism. * The Co-eds have very appro priately named Brooks "the broad browed one. "Pug" Bennet, the guy that put the band on bandits, still has that "old time pep." * ** Now that Wright is off the staff, I)r. Moore's chickens will be kept out of the columns. We long to see the day when a few of our freshmen will be equipped with smoke monitors. If Hugh Hanna and Geer "C." F. W., it goes without further consideration that Schneider and fresh Sharp "C." C. We hesitate to take that trip West with the music hunch this summer for fear we be mistaken for an escaped Mexican regiment. The fellows who are in the militia were hot for war with Mexico, but the mention of Styx as a mobilization camp has some what cooled their ardlor. Dr. Mills is a minute man. It is rumored that for fear he will be called suddenly to Mexico he has already made out the ques tions for a quiz to leave with us as his last token of respect. The fact that those college girls sitting in church immediate ly behint Craig, Crow, Jackson, Morehead and F. C. Smith were tickled was merely a matter of local color. THE LIFE WORK LECTURES. The ten big life work lectures which have been given in Flinn Hall by representative business and professional men of Colum bia have been very much appre ciated by the University students and faculty. This series of ad dresses was arranged especially for the benefit of those students who have found it difficult to de cide definitely upon their choice of profession or business. We hold that the course has been a great success due of course to the spirit of cooperation and sym pathy on the part of those loyal citizens who took time from their business to come to speak to us, presenting the practical side of the professional world. There is not a mother's son of us who does not appreciate the consider ation and who does not hold in high esteem the respect of the business men of this great city in which we are spending the most critical period of our lives. Never was there such a spirit of mutual helpfulness between w ,n of experience and men who are almost ready to take their places as leaders of men as was evidenced in the addresses of the ten speakers. And we predict that as long as the University has the hearty support and con fidence of the leading business men of Columbia there ne:.d be no fear for the future. Carolina and Columbia, one and insepar able, now and forevermore. THE SPIRIT, NOT THE LETTER. The honor system which exists in the University and in other southern institutions is on trial. Some noble spirited being out of his confidence in humanity and faith in the power of education to sweeten the consciences of men, hit upon the idea that col lege students can be best govern ed1 by putting them upon their hono ,and granting them self gov ment. Consequently we have today the honor sytem in a number of colleges and institu tions, which means merely that every man passes as a gentleman, and a man of truth until he prove himself something madle of bas or stuff. We are glad that the Univer sity of South Carolina is one among the number of state insti.. tutions of America to adopt this system of student government. But the eyes of the Western, Eastern, yea even the strong eyes of foreign colleges and uni versities, which have not adopt ed the honor system are upon us. Indeed they are watching with intense interest the operations of the honor system, and its moral results. And whether it will be universally adopted will be de termined by the results with which it meets at the hands of those institutions which now em ploy it. Now, after noticing the sig nificance of the position Carolina holds in respect to the extension of the honor system, we should act with care and consideration. There is no written law of honor. But we contend that there is lit tle honor in cofessing to a wrong act after having been "copped;" the man who is guilty and is not caught with gang, and yet con fesses, in him lies honor. The dignity of the honor system demands the respect of all civili zation. It is a child of democracy. But there can be no democracy without the democratic spirit, the essence of which is as voiced by Bobbie Burns, "A man's a man for a' that." We believe that every man on the Univer sity campus should have a square deal whether he be a freshman or a senior, and any imposition upon the rights of the least of us is a breach of the honor spstem.
