LECTURES TO STUDENTS
Mr. Sullivan of U. S. Weather
Bureau Makes Interesting Talk.
Mr. Sullivan, who has charge
of the United States weather bu
reau in this State, delivered an
interesting lecture before classes
in Physiography on Wednesday
night. Mr. Sullivan has consent
ed to give a series of lectures,
one weekly, on subjects relating
to his work. The subject of his
lecture on Wednesday was "The
Atmosphere."
He opened his lecture by giving
in a few words one theory as to
the origin of this planetary sys
tem of ours. He described the
earth as it is supposed to have
been before life was upon it. The
origin of the moon was also dis
cussed. Then Mr. Sullivan took
up the subject of the atmosphere,
giving its composition, and speak
ing of the immense pressure it
exerted on the surface of the
earth. The atmosphere becomes
lighter in direct proportion to the
altitude.
He mentioned the fact that the
per cent of carbon, oxygen and
nitrogen decreases as one ascends.
A man can live at about 7 miles
altitude, certainly no higher. He
defined temperature; spoke of
the transmission of heat. The
great sudden changes in temper
ature are due to movements in
the atmosphere. The seasons
were discussed by Mr. Sullivan.
He spoke of rain fall in different
parts of the world. He answered
the (question, "what is the cause
of the condensation of water
vapor?"
Mr. Sullivan concluded by ex
plaining the wind changes due to
the rotation of the earth. le
will speak - again next Wednes
day evening at 8 o'clock in the
semi-circular room of LeConte
College.
