BULLETINS IN GEOLOGY On Titanium and Spatite by Dr. Stephen Taber. A bulletin on the "Geology of the Titanium and Spatite Depos its of Virginia," by Dr. T. L. Watson of the University of Vir ginia and Dr. Stephen Taber of the University of South Carolina has recently been issued by the Virginia Geological Survey. It is a volume of 320 pages, pro fusely illustrated with 22 figures and 37 plates, including a colored geologic map and .numerous pho tomicrographs of thin rock sec tions. The ore deposits described in this report are found in two areas; one lying in Amherst and Nelson counties, and the other in Goochland and Hanover counties, 6 Virginia. The Amherst-Nelson counties area is of considerable scientific interest because the : igneous rocks, in which the ores occur, are new types, different c, from any that have been describ E ed elsewhere. d The economic importance of these areas is due to the fact that they contain the richest and most extensive deposits of rutile that have been discovered in any part of the world. The mineral rutile, consisting of titanium dioxide, is at present the only commercial source of titanium, and within the last few years several very important uses for this substance have been developed. Titanium steel is now being used for many .purposes and es pecially in the manufacture of steel rails. Rails made from steel that has been treated with one-tenth of one per cent of titanium, last two or three times as long as the ordinary Bessemer rails. Titaiium is also extensive ly used in the manufacture of pencils for electric-are lamps, giving a better and cheaper light than those made of carbon. Ti tanium products are used as mordants and dyes for leather goods and textiles, in coloring high grades of porcelain and china, and for many other pur poses of lesser importance. Dr. Taber says that some of the students have brought in specimens of rutile from localities in South Carolina, and that de posits of commercial value may be found in the Piedmont section of the State, tho none are now known to exist. Dr. Taber is also the author of a bulletin of 233 pages on the gold deposits of Virginia, which was published by the Virginia Geological Survey last summer.
