CAROLINA VS. CITADEL.
Old Rivals Meet in Basketball
Game Tonight.
Tonight at 8 o'clock the Game
cock basketball team meets the
Citadel Bulldog in the University
gymnasium. Since their disas
trous trip through North Caroli
na and Virginia the Carolina
squad has been put through some
hard work by Coach Blackburn.
Several changes have been made
and the coach belIeves that these
will materially benefit the team.
The Citadel comes from New
berry where They met the Lu
therans last night. Several fa
miliar faces will be seen on their
squad. Folger and Weeks, of
football fame, are members of
the team and are said to be just
as- adapt in this line of sport as
they are in the grand old college
game.
No definite linenp coald be had
of either team. The members of
Carolina's team are reticent, but
feel sure if the student body will
come out and back them they
will still style themselves "State
Champions." So lets all come
out tonight at8 o'clock and give
the boys the glad hand.

Students Contemplating Study of
Medicine Form Society.
At a meeting held in the semi
circular room of LeConte College
Thursday night, an Aescelapian
Society was organized. Seven
students were present, and these
with two others who have taken
an active interest, were enrolled
as charter members. They are:
Beard, Boone, Dozier, Harrison,
Hoffman, Mitchell, Waring,. Ful
ler and Shirley. The following
officers were elected: President,
E. S. Waring; Vice-President,
W. V. Hoffman; Secretary and
Treasurer, H. H. Beard, Jr.
As the name implies, this is a
student society of men who ex
pect to go into the study of med
icine. There are fully twenty
men in collcge who have aspira
tions along this line and should
promptly become members. A
yearly fee of .75c is to be oharg
ed, payable upon initiation, to go
to defraying the expense of a
picture in the Garnet and Black.
Harrison Hoffman and Waring
are on a committee to formulate
some brief rules of eligibility,
and the tendency seems to be to
allow students from any class ex
the freshman to become mem
bers.
The society will meet once a
month frain now till June, and by
then each member will have
been assigned a paper to prepare.
Besides this I)r. J. H. Taylor has
consented to speak to the society
on a topic especially interesting
to pre-medic students, and to al
low it to meet once this spring
with an informal club composed
of Drs. Theo DuBose, Jr., N. B.

Julius H. Taylor.
Professors Attract Attention.
An entire page in the scientific
department of the Literary Di
gest, of January 17, was devoted
to an article written by Dr. Jo
siah A. Morse on investigations
made by him of the relative in
telligence of negro and white
children. Dr. Morse mentioned
the result of some of his tests
m,ie here in Columbia with the
aid of what is known as Binet's
"Scale of Intelligence." This ar
ticle has attracted much atten
tlon from scientists in different
parts of the country.
Dr. Reed Smith has published
in the January issue of the
South Atlantic Quarterly a long
article entitled "Popular Etymo
logy."
