M'GOWAN AND DUNN
PICK ALL-STAR TEAM
(Continued from Page One)
At center we would place
Rogers of the Seniors. Although
he has played some at guard, we
think that he with his natural
abilities and four years of exper
ience would make an ideal center.
He is deadly on the defence, and
his offence is all that could be
desired for a class man
Left-guard goes to Slaughter
of the Freshies. Slaughter work
ed only a while in one game at
guard, but that was enough to
convince the most skeptical as to
his worth as a line man. West
moreland of the Juniors gets the
call at right guard. Those who
have played against him realize
that further comment is unnec
essary.
At tackle positions we should
say that Wright and LaMotte
6 stand head and shoulders above
US the rest. This Wright is an old
head in class football, while La
motte with not so much experi
ence easily makes up the defici
ency by his strength and aggres
siveness.
No one would dispute the
claim of "Red" Farr to right
end. He proved the Waterloo of
many a touchdownward bound,
and his playing was at all times
brilliant and sensational. Hiller
of the Sophs is given the other
end because of his superior play.
In the backfield there were
plenty of good men, who would
have acquitted themselves with
great credit on any football
eleven, It is indeed a regret
table fact that we had in school
such valuable men who were not
out for varsity. Digressing a
little, class football in the past
has not fulfilled its mission. It
is all very good to stir up class
spirit and rivah-y for the posses
sion of the coveted cup. But
that is not what class football is

intended for. Its fundamental
aim is to develop men for the
varsity and to inculcate interest
in football. In the past how
many men from the class teams
have gone out for the varsity
and stuck the entire season.
They are too few to enumerate.
Every man who has made his
class team ought to feel himself
personally obligated to go out
and stick for the varsity. This
little comment is to be taken in
the spirit in which it is given.
Now proceeding to the back
field: at quarter we would place
Wilcox of the Freshmen. In the
game against the Sophs he show
ed class both as field general and
running with the ball, and his
defence was a redeeming feature
of his team's defeat. Geer is
probably a better quarter, but
he is given another place in the
backfield.
Edens and Ellzey of the Seniors
seem to be the logical men for
the halfbacks. Although Edens
officiated at quarterback, we
think that he would be of more
service at halfback. He is a fast,
aggressive man, and fights to the
last and is always hard to pull
down. He is given the captain
cy of the team because of his
coolness under fire and experi
ence both here and at Wofford.
Ellzey, his running mate, is an
ideal halfback. He is very fast
and uses the stiff arm to a good
advantage. He has the old nev
er die spirit.
At fullback Geer is the pick of
the field. Although rather light
for his position he could deliver
the goods. His greatest asset is
his low charge, which combined
with h is speed and quick starts
makes him a dangerous man at
all times. His defense and re
turning of punts is of pie order.
There are several good men,
while not good enough to be giv
en a position, who are retained
as substitutes. It is an old tru
ism in football that a team is no
stronger than its substitutes,
and these men could well fill the
position of any incapacitated by
injuries or otherwise. As subs
we would name, Green of the
Sopl-s, Templeton of the Sophs,
Horton of the Juniors, Kerr of
the Freshmen and Jeter of the
Seniors.
This concludes our selection,
and we hope that it will meet
with the heartiest approval of
all. It would be a great bill for
this team to p)lay the scrubs on
University Field, Christmas Day,
for a twenty-five pound turkey.
