INTERCOLLEGIATE TRACK
MEN FORM ASSOCIATION
Athletes from Four Colleges
Met Here Saturday.
R. L. Thomas of Newberry Will
Head New Organization.
Blackburn-is Secretary
Representatives from four of
the colleges of the State met,
according to schedule, in Flinn
Hall Saturday evening and or
ganized the South Carolina Inter
collegiate Track Association, the
four colleges represented at the
meeting entering the initial or
ganization. An effort will be
made to induce the remaining
colleges of the State to enter
the association, and it is confi
dently expected that they will do
so, some of them having already
sigified their intention in this
direction.
Those present had a clear idea
of the object of the meeting, thus
avoiding an extensive prelimi
nary, and the work of getting
down to the matter of a definite
organization was executed with
very satisfactory dispatch. R.
L. Thomas, who is Newberry Col
lege's athletic director, was elect
ed president of the association.
John Blackburn, the University.
athletic director, was elected fi
nancial secretary; G. W. Wanna
maker, of Wofford, field secre
tary; W. E. Davis, Presbyterian
-College of South Carolina, cor
responding secretary; I. Ussery,
of the Citadel, recorder; while
Luke Hill was placed in charge
of the department of publicity.
The first annual track meet of
the new association will occur
next spring, it being decided to
hold the event here in Columbia,
on Davis Field sometime in April,
preferably the Friday of Easter
week, since such a date would
not only add a very attractive
event to these festivities, but in
crease the attendance upon and
interest in the meet itself. The
meet will be held, as has been
stated, under the rules of the
Southern Intercollegiate Athletic
Association. It is believed that
prior to this meet every col
lege in the State will have joined
the association and will have
representatives contesting for
track honors.
In addition to the first annual
meet of the track association, the
University of South Carolina will
meet .here, sometime In April,
track teams from. Davidson and
North Carolina University, or at
least such a meet is now antici
pated by local men who are re
puted to be on "the inside."

Debating League Constitution
The University of Georgia's
proposed constitution of the tri
angular debating league has been
accepted by Carolina's debating
council. Under this plan each of
the Universities participating will
have a negative and affirmative
team. No team will debate before
a home audience. For instance,
one of Carolina's teams will meet
Virginia at Georgia, the other,
Georgia at Virginia, while Geor
gia and Virginia, of course, will
debate here. The meet will prob
ably be held about the first of
May.
in the formation of this new ath
letic association is conceded to the
University and will, without
doubt, render the University and
her athletes profitable returns,
since it is not questioned that in
a few years track work will oc
cupy a position of very material,
substantial prominence in the
intercollegiate athletic relations
of this State.
