Friday night at 8:80 the first
basket-ball game of the year will
be staged in the University (ym
nasium. At that hour the New
berry five will meet the Carolina
five in what promises to be one
of the hardest fought games of
the season.
The Newberry team has been
coached by Roy Thomas, who
turned out such a splendid foot
ball team the past season.
John Blackburnhasbeen coach
ing the Garnet and Black squad
and promises: to turn out the best
five Carolina has ever had.
No official line-up has been an
nounced as yet but the following
men will probably start the game.

Poole-Center
Stoney-Guard
Hanahan-Guard
Farrell, McMillan, Godbold, R.
Waring, E. Waring and Chapman
will probably get into the game.
Carolina will go in~to the game
weakened by the loss of Howard
Danner, whose work at Guard
has been a feature of the past
two years. Danner had the mis
fortune to have his thumb knock
ed out of place on Monday.
State Oratorical Contest.
B. Davenport represented the
University at a meeting of the
executive committee of the South
Carolina Oratorical Association
held at Rock Hill, December 5.
Although Greenwood made a
strong representation of their
claims far the next oratorical
contest, the committee decided
to hold it at Rock Hill, April 24.
In drawing for the order of
speakers Carolina received sec
ond place.
Trinity Submits Query.
The debating council of Trinity
College has submitted the follow
ing query for the Carolina-Trini
ty debate: Resolved, "That the
United States Should Maintain a
Position as One of the Leading
Naval Power's of the World."
The local council will decide in a
few days which side of the query
Carolina will uphold.
Tlhis debate will be held in the
early spring and no doubt will be
of great interest, as each insti
tution has won one of the con
tests and this third contest will
decide the winner of the series.
