Davis was elected president of the Philological Club of the University. Prof."L. T. Baker represented the University at the Knoxville meeti t Assoeiation of Southern Schools and Colleges. Baker, Burney ,aV Js Wau chope. President Moore spent the first four days of the week in New York at the' meeting of the board, of directors of the Peabody fund. Roddey Medal Contest. The Roddey Medal Contest will be held in the chapel December 10th. The subject for this year will be the direct election of judges. This is always one of the most interesting contests of the season, and this year will be no exception to the rule, for some of the ablest speakers' in the University have already signified their intention of_trying for the medal. Basketball Practice. Regular basketball practice is under way at the gymnasium. Every afternoon from 5:30 to 7 o'clock there are 10 or 15 would be goal tossers out at work. Dur ing the next few weeks the class games will be played. The first varsity game will be with New berry,-December the 11th. John Blackburn will coach the team and assist it to win a large per centage of the games on sched ule. Grates Gratis. Marshall Haile has put in about fort,y grates in the old dormi tories. Formerly the students were forced to buy their own grates or stoves ond then pay for having them put in. C. A. Rev. Mr.- Wakefield, pastor of the Second Baptist Church, and an experienced chorus trainer, will conduct the class without re muneration. A -number of men w ere present at the organization, but it is hoped that many others will .ioin later. There is-a great demand in Columbia and else where for men whb can carry a tune in a bushel basket to assist in social and religious work; and the Y. M. C. A through Mr. Wakefield Is endeavgring to train men to meet this need.
