F. W. TOWLES LECTURES IN LECONTE COLLEGE Many Students Hear Address on Truck Farming. Oldest Truck Farmer in the Palmetto State Tells of His Experience and Success. Mr. V. W. Towles, of Yonge's Island, delivered an interesting lec ture -Monday in LeConte College on ""'he Growing of Truck in South Carolina." The gist of his lecture was as follows: In 1868 Mr. ''owles )egan his career as a truck farmer by planting a few acres. This attempt was a failure. .\gain in 1872 lie attacked the truck farming problem and has risen rapidly since. Hle now has nearly fifteen thousand acres in di f ferent parts of the State, 8,ooo in Charleston County. 2,100 in Barn well, 2,600 in Beaufort, and other scattered farms. Tlis chief crops are: Cabbage, potatoes, cucumnbers, beans, lettuce. beets, melons, aspara gus and peas. At present he sells over 00,.00,000 cabbage plants yearly. Continuous vigilance is the price of success. Soil, position, transpor tation facilities, weather and the correct choice of crops are the prin cipal factors that must he taken into consideration. Early crops, even though chances must he taken be cause of the weather, are more profitable iln the end. \ good truck farmer must he an all-around man, a Jack-of-all-trades, for he tiust be a carpenter, blacksmith. veterinary, weather prophet and, in fact, know a little of everything.
