He told of its beginning in 1701, of its present size with two undergraduate de partments and one graduate depart ment, where every conceivable sub ject may be studied; of its million volume library. There are 17,500 living graduates of this institution. At one time early in the last cen tury, Charleston was always third or fourth in the list of cities send ing the greatest number of men to Yale. Some famous South Caro linians who have graduated there are: Stephen Eliot, who was elect ed president of South Carolina Col lege, but could not serve; Stephen E. Gadsden, of the class of 1804; James S. Adams, elected governor of this State in 1855, and a mem ber of the Secession Convention ; James Gadsden, famous for ne gotiating for the "Gadsden Pur chase," and Augustus B. Longstreet, educator and author, of whom Mr. Woodruff had previously spoken. The speaker then told of Carolina's greatest son, John C. CAlhoun, and of his career at Yale. Calhoun en tered the junior class after finishing at his brother-in-law's school, known as \Vaddell's School. His com mencement oration was on "The Qualifications Necessary for a Statesman," but on account of sick ness it was never delivered and has been lost. The reform of the civil service that is being agitated now is treated in several of Calhoun's speeches. His treatise on "Govern ment" is the only American treatise that can be compared to John Locke's on the same suhject. Dr. Cross told of many other famous Southern Yale men whose names will live in the history of the nation. In concluding, he told of the me morial being erected at Yale to the "Yale men who gave their lives in the Civil War." Upon the memorial will be a list of several hundred names, with no distinction between those who fought for the North and those who fought for the South. This is the spirit that binds the na tion together today. Dr. Mitchell then expressed his gratification and appreciation. This, said he. is a great cont ribum tion to the national life, as is ev'ery thing that helps bind the nation to gether as this evening has (lone. SOUTHERN ORATORICAL HELD AT UNIVERSITY On May' 7, Carolina is to have one of the biggest events of the session, the Southern Intercollegiate Orator ical contest. As James Allan, Jr.. of Carolina, won first place last year, the contest will he .held here as is provied by te constitutio. Because of the greatness of the event it will be held in the Columbia Theatre. The members of the asso ciation are: University of the South, Vanderbilt University, University of Alabama, University of Virginit, University of South Carolina, and Transylvania University of Kei tucky. The following are to have charge of the arrangements: Ben M. Saw yer, chief marshal ; Lester Perkin$, V. V. Hoffman, G. G. Christopher, L. L. Riley, and H. V. Pearcy, as sistant marshals.
