Letter From Dr. Joynes.
Editor of THE GAMECOCK:
You ask me for a letter and I send
you the following:
By request of President Mitchell
I have replied to the inquiries of a
professor in one of our leading
Northern colleges with regard to the
"Honor System" in college life.
After answering in detail his several
questions, I added the following
note, which I hope may interest your
readers as vell as being my own
"Confession of Faith":
"Dear Sir: This is written by one
who has been in college life since
1848 and a college teacher since
1853. I have lived under every sys
tem-have witnessed the utter fail
ure of "monitors" and of every other
plan of supervision or detection-for
when a body of students attempt to
deceive a professor or a committee,
they will alwcays succeed, and under
such conditions college life is dIe
grading to both parties. The only
true system for the education of gen
tleien by gentlemen is the "Honor
System"-that is, the system of mu
tual respect and confidence. In the
South we know no other system
deem none other possible. Here the
faculty and the students are simply
two bodies of gentlemen, in official
and friendly relation. We respect
each other; our relations are delight
ful ; the moral tone of the students is
above all praise. Let me add, how
ever, one final word : If the honor
system is adopted for the students,
it must be adopted for the faculty
.also, and by them scrupulously ob
served. If we require students to be
gentlemen, we must treat them as
gentlemen, and remember it is better
(if need be) to be sometimes de
ceived than to surrender that confi
dence which is the foundation of so
ciety. I fear that in some colleges it
may be more difficult to establish the
honor system in the faculty than
among the students; but in every
case it is the only foundation of hon
orable and happy relations in college
life.
"Very respectfully, etc."
I write you this, Mr. Editor, as an
expression of my deep sense of the
high moral tone of our students, and
of the cordial and happy relations
between students and faculty. We
are here reaping, perhaps uncon
sciously, the best fruits of the tradi
tional "honor system," wvhich has al
ways characterized this institution,
as pre-eminently a lplace "for the ed
ucation of gentlemen by gentlemen."
I am proud to be connected wvith it,
and wvith such a body of students.
EDWvARD S. JOYNES.

New York reporter-a life filled
with adventures, some comedies,
sonic tragedies; with close contact
with the leaders of the national life,
social, moral, political, educational

the average yoing man, who is well
educated and of medium intelligence,
to succeed in this line of endeavor.
In fact, the majority of New York
newspaper men are from small
towns. There is always an opening
for these, and it is their own fault if
they do not make good.
