PROF. S. H. EDMUNDS.
SPEAKS AT UNIVERSITY
Supt. of Sumter Schools Lectures to
Normal Students LeConte College.
Prof. S. H. Edmunds, Superin
tendent of Suniter schools, an alum
nus of Carolina, gave an interesting
and instructive lecture on "The
Qualifications of a Teacher" in
Davis College last Friday morning.
He stressed the point that boys
and girls should be separated after
the age of fourteen, and that the
boys should have a man teacher. The
teacher should know the nature and
aspiration of each boy; he should
learn to give and take, and act with
perfect fairness lie should be force
ful and courageous. In order for a
teacher to be successful lie must be
vigorous, virile, scholarly. able to
teach and to govern, and must be a
true man with genuine manhood.
A virile man, that is, one who has
a strong masculine appearance, must
be proficient in outdoor sports, and
be able to appeal strongly to his stu
dents. The teacher must he well
grounded on his subjects in order
that he may be respected by his pu
pils, and that he may give them an
ideal-a necessity with boys. As
every teacher must govern his p)u
pils, there are certain laws and uses
that he should keep in mind. Gen
uine manhood is included in all the
above qualifications and is depen
dent upon them.
The lecture was enjoyed by all
present, as Professor Edniunds has
(lone much along educational lines,
and speaks from experience.
