ADVISORY BOARD
AWARDS LETTERS
Fifteen Football Men of Past
Season Get Block "C's."
Number Unusally Large on Account
of Ability of All Contestants for
Team-Who Receive the Honor.
The advisory board in its very im
portant meeting on last Saturday
conferred C's on fifteen men of the
football squad. To win one of these
trophies is to win one of the most
envied honors in college. The 'var
sity huskies who have won them
have had them in their mind's eye
through many long scrimmages,
hardships and fierce struggles en
dured to bring victory to their col
lege. These are rewards for distin
guished service rendered, and it is
but proper that after so glorious a
season so many men should receive
them.
Those who get them are: Fritz
von Kolnitz, our gallant retiring
captain, whose consistent starring
has been invaluable in the season's
success; Big John Mills, the Game
cock's leader for 1913; Dan Hey
ward, about the best pigskin toter in
these parts; "Bub" Langston, one of
the best gainers ever seen in ac
tion ; Bill Harth, of Clemson game
fame; Dutch Passailaigue, a gifted
fullback; Girardeau, who can be de
pended on to make sure passes and
give the opposition trouble; Porter
and Stoney, a pair of formidable
guards; Brann, who revels in cutting
down secondary defense; Sligh,
hard. tackling end; Hill, whose
tackles taken in steady closes are
warranted to put any opponent hors
de combat ; Avinger, fighting line
man, and Big Dunn, a crafty veteran
who stars anywhere.
The Civic club met Thursday
evening in the green room of Flinn
hall. An interesting program was
carried out, including several short
talks by members of the club. Plans
are being' perfected by the commit
tee in charge for a smoker to be
held in the near future at which
time it is hoped that prominent bus
iness and professional men of the
city may be present and mlake short
add(resses along the lines of the
purp~loCs of the organization.
Notice to Chapel Goers.

FRESH AND SOPH TEAMS
MEET THIS AFTERNOON !
Odds Are Even on Annual
Football Event.
Juniors Meet Seniors Tuesday, and
Final Championship Meet Will Be
Staged Later in Week-Dope.
Class teams have been miuxing
things up among themselves for the
past week trying to get in shape for
the series of games to decide the
winner of the cup. The freshman
sophomore game will be pulled off
this afternoon and the juniors and
seniors will try to mop up with each
other Tuesday. The date of the
final game has not yet been set, but
it will probably be played the latter
part of next week.
Much more interest is being shown
this year than usual, and the squads
are large and have a lot of that pro
verbial pep and ginger. The games
will all be hard fought and class
spirit is running high over the out
come.
The freshman butich got on the
job some forty strong last Friday,
and since then Coach Dunn, assisted
by Bristow, has been rounding them
into form. The '16 men are a hefty
crew and have high hopes of making
things warm for the sophomores
this afternoon. Among the most
promising aspirants for the team are
Hamilton, Coggeshall, Behling, An
derson, McKeithan, Stover, Mitch
ell, Templeton, Stoney, Padgett, Cri
der and Kilgore.
The sophomores, too, have been
out in full force and with Dan Hey
ward behind them with all his super
abundant pep they have gotten out a
hustling bunch. Dan has been helped
in coaching by Hill, Langston, Per
kins and Sligh, and with these
hefties showing the green ones how,
everything is up to the mark. Some
of the best material for the team is
found in Edmunds, \Vestmoreland,
Templeton, Saye, Edwards, Roberts,
Horton, Pierce, Moon, Dean, Scott
and Altman.
The juniors, headed by John Shu
ler, an old Citadel star, are being
whipped into shape by Dutch Pas
sailaigue, Big Mills and( Jerry Por
ter. They have a heavy line and a
fast b)ack field and wvill push sonme
b)ody for the cup. There are, among
others, in their squad, Royall, Rod
gers, Wrighlt, McLeod, Cudd, Dud
icy, Elsey, Willi ford, Shuler, Hoff
mlanl, Edens, Purdy, Carpenter,
O'Neil and Pearcy, andc something is
p)retty apt to happen whlen .they are
IG MILLS ELECTED
CAPTAIN GAMECOCKS
Hefty Tackle of Garnet and
Black Will Lead in 1913.
Has Seen Three Years' Service on the
'Varsity and Will Make Good
Field General.
The 'varsity men of the Carolina
football team, at a banquet Monday
night, given by Mr. Harry Ed
munds, of this city, an .alumnus of
the university, elected John D. Mills
of Laurens captain for the 1913
team. Mills has played on the 'var
sity for the past three years, oper
ating for a while at end, a while at
fullback, but most of the time at
tackle, where he has starred during
the past season.
At the latter position there are few
in the game in this neck of the woods
who have any goods on the next cap
tain. He is six feet tall, weighs 180
pounds and combines an aggressive
ness with this abundant avoirdupois
which makes him a most formidable
line man. He keeps the old pep cir
culating through the team and hands
out a line of talk during the scrim
mages that sounds well from the side
lines and inspires the confidence of
his team mates.
His three years of experience have
taught him many of the tricks of the
game and he will undoubtedly make
good as a field general.
turned loose on the seniors Tues
lay.
The seniors have held the cup
since '09 and are making a desperate
effort to hold it to the end. Fritz
von Kolnitz and Ted Girardeau have
been on the job as coaclhe and have
no (loubt put some of their own abil
ity into the team. It is reported by
those who ought to know that I3ou
chier and Dr. Cook are showing such
form as to lead us to believe that the
only reason they are not all-Southern
stars is because they do not want the
job. Other candidates for star
(1om1 are Wilds, McTeer, Owens,
Hill, Watts. Green, Hughes, Rollins,
Bariett, Cork, Covington and
Tlhomias.
M\'essr-s. Hloffmani, M itchecll and
