Farewell, season of 1912. We feel chesty over thee. Not so had, this thing of being champions of t he State, eh ? Tigers and Blulldogs, they all look digestible to the Gamecocks. Those old SC)res against Florida and Virginia will be paid next year. Wonder how that Tiger and Bull clog are getting altong down in the craw of the Rooster. Looking at the matter in retro spect, there were some 'pur-rades pulled off this year. Skating around on one ear in the snow was a hard thing to do, but those Gamecocks wantel that game. With eleven. varsity men back next year and a few converted re cruits-say, how about that 1913 team? Anything that we have ever said about the mess hall, we now see to be low and mean since that Thanks giving dinner. WVe hate to qutote Latin, but the motto of the Gamecocks in the Citadel game must have beeni "Cita del delenda est." There was no better way to cele brate Thanksgiving (lay than by trimming that Citadel bunch. And we did it. We feel real stuck tip about this State championship, butt that South1 ern bluec ribbon dangles mighty temptingly in the air. Darlington H-Iigh school knowvs what to (do with her football stars. Five of them cavorted on our own varsity the past season. The Scrubs. There is an adage of football which has it that a varsity is no stronger than the scrubs make it. Logically, then, a strong varsity bespeaks a strong second eleven and measured by this standard, the Carolina scrubs constitute a foot ball team worthy of more than pass ing consideration. Scrubs-'the name itself is apt to create preju (lice in the minds of the unin formed reader of sport stories who likes to read about the big guns, however small a cap pistol he may happen to be himself. So, then, the scrub never sees his name or cut adorning the daily press. never hears his shouting com panions giving cheers for him from the sidelines, or feels the thrill that comes with lighting a foreign foe l le it is who, with undaunted hero ism and moral courage, labors well in his lowly station that others may be exalted and the glory of his col lege upheld. Unhonored and un noticed by the passing crowd. he receives none of the praise that comes from dashing performances on the gridiron. and vet by daily toil fights into form and into fame his opponent of the varsity. Per haps, after all, lie is the greater hero of the two, for he lights with out hope of reward. The bunch of inconspicuous per formers who adorn the scrub te,im of this university are as responsible for the success of the past season as are the stars of the varsity, and all those who glory in Carolina's foot ball team pay a silent tribute to the lowly, but heroic, scrub. J. Archibald Mace. If faithfulness to duty is to de termine whether or not we mortals shall be admitted into the pearly gates, St. Peter had just as well make out a ticket in favor of J. Archibald Mace, sometimes known as Bull Dog. Every afternoon for the past four years. except when confined to the infirmary by in juries, this pugnacious individual has given every ounce of his strength to the perfection of the team. One year he operated most of the time on the varsity, but for the other trio of seasons his work has featured the scrubs. Short of stature, but long of grit and sp)irit, he has been resp)onsib)le in no0 small measure for the strength of every team that has represented the university for the past four years andl his departure from the scene of activities on Davis field will be regretted by all who hav'e the good of thme Carolina team at heart. Coach Red Edgerton thinks lhe's going to start practicing medicine next Junme. Hei may start all right, hut in Sept ember, 1913, his auburn top)ped1 head has got to begin figur ing out plays for the varsity to run off, and keep this up for the rest of the season. The New Athletic Association. Much interest has been aroused locally by the movement launched by the University of Virginia look ing to the formation of an athletic association among the colleges and universities of the States of South Carolina, North Carolina and Vir ginia, which are not now members of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic association. The new or ganization, wlhile it will attempt in a general way to regulate the ath letic conduct of its members, has as its primary object the union of non association colleges for the purpose of giving its members equal rights and privileges with institutions of the Southern association when ath letic contests are held between col leges of the two organizations. The movement is of interest here because the other three colleges of the State, which put out football teams, are members of the Southern association and under the peculiar rules of that body the university is handicapped when playing with either the College of Charleston, the Citadel or Clemson. For the past four years since the reinstate inent of football by the board of trustees, we have built up fairly good football machines in the early games of the season. only to see sonic of their members, usually the best men of the team, ruled out of the Clemson game on account of the by-laws of the Southern associ ation. The injustice of it has been felt for many years and it is hoped that the prospective association will make certain provisions, giving the university an equal chance with the Tiger and the Bulldog and any other association team which her representatives may meet. Early in the game Thursday Brann developed an incompatibil ity of temperament with his oppon ent in the line and there was quar reling for the rest of the fracas. The biggest regret of the season is that we were not able to secure a game with Davidson. \Ve had it in for those Presbyterians and be lieve that the Gamecocks would have copped.
