PRESIDENT MITCHELL, ADDRESSES Y. M. C. A. Talks Before Men of City on "What Is Your Life Worth to the Com munity?" At a meeting held in the gym nasium of the new Y. M. C. A. building, to which the students of the University were especially in vited, Dr. S. C. Mitchell held the closest attention of his audience upon the question, "What is your life worth to your community ?" "All men thirst for considera tion," said the speaker. They desire individuality. They hate to be made into human machines. 1-ere Dr Mitchell emphatically stressed the importance of a man's seeking inde pendence of thought and action. > The great deeds of history have been accomplished by men of originality. C' One of the greatest evils of our present industrial system is that it takes away a man's personality and : transforms him into a mere machine. d. For example, a messenger boy was run down by a car and seriously in jured. When he was asked his name, he could only remember to say. "Number 223." Among the great ideas for the im provement of the community are: Good roads, better schools, public health, and improved methods in farming. A man is worth to the public only what he does for the common good. The great ideal for men is service to the community of which they are a part. CONGRATULATIONS SENT TO PRESIDENT-ELECT Woodrow Wilson League of College Men Wires Congratulations to Its Chieftain. The news of the election of Gov ernor Woodrowv Wilson was receiv edl on the campus with great joy, not only because the studlent body is overwhelmingly Denmocrat ic, b)ut also because here are headquarters for the Woodrow Wilson League of College Men. Under the dlirection of a fewv students the league was launched last year and soon em b)racedl in its membership near-ly a hundred colleges and universities of the country from wvidely separated States. A recent editorial in The Nationi attrib)utes no small value to the p)art which students of Amrerica through this organization have ac comlished in the campaign of Giov. Wilson. W. H-. Scott. president of the league, Vednesday morning sent the nominee the following telegram President-elect \Voodrow \Vilson, Princeton, N. J. C. The University of South Carolina Founded by the State in 1801 in the Capital City The University has the following departments of study: I. The College, with various courses of study in Lan guages, History, Science, etc., leading to the degrees of A. B. and B. S. Five general scholarships, worth from $100 to $150 each. II. Graduate School, with advanced courses leading to the degree of Master of Arts. The graduates of the colleges of South Carolina are ad mitted to the University in all courses, except Law, without charge for tuition. II. The School of Commerce and Finance, with a course leading to the degree of A. B. Also special two-years' course for men who expect to enter business, journalism, the public service, or law. IV. School for Teachers, which seeks to prepare persons to serve the State as teachers, principals and superintendents of schools. In this course the A. B. degree is conferred. Forty-four teachers' scholarships, each worth $100 in cash and exemption from tuition and term fees. V. Engineering, Civil and Electrical, leading to the degrees of C. E. and E. E. Practical Work in Road Construction. VI. Law, with a course leading to the degree of LL. B. The presence of the various courts and the use of the State Law Library afford exceptional facilities. Graduates of the Law School are admitted to the State Bar with'out examination. Law scholarships worth $190. Through its system of .Extension Teaching the University offers correspondence courses, public lectures, and night classes, to persons unable otherwise to receive academic training. College fees for the year, $18, including medical attention. For women college fees are only $12. For those paying tuition, $40 additional. Room, with light and service, $8 a year.
