Reddy Metts is the guy that put foot in football. We have a big hunch that the Gamecocks are gonig to win two battles this afternoon. The Civic Club plans to inspect the negro quarters of the city. This departure and a large class studying "Negro Life in the South"'indicate That Porter bunch evidently has some goods if their work against the Orangeburg high school may be taken as a sample. But what it takes to mop up, the scrubs have it. Claflin and Benedict met on the gridiron the past week. The meet was rather tame since under the new rules no razors were allowed. A rather unpleasant experience of Brother \Voodrow is recalled in this connection. Come to think of it, we have beaten Clemson twice out of the last five games played. In 1902 the Gamecocks triumphed, and on ac count of a slight altercation after the game, athletic relations were sus pended until 1909. The Tigers were victorious in 1909, 'lo and 'ii, but it is a matter of common knowvledge that Carolina won the most recent meet het ween the two teams. Dope Repository. As the campaign fund press agent says, "All contri butions thankfully received." Confession of Faith. Party platforms and editorial salutatories are alike in that they are supposed to contain a declaration of policy and are read by few. How ever, custom decrees that political parties shall put their platforms in black and white, to be known of all men, and that the new staff of every publication shall thus proclaim its beliefs as to how affairs in its par ticular field should be conducted. So the new editorial staff of THE GAMECOCK must make public the policies and plans which it proposes to pursue. Althougjh constricted in scope and having but a narrow circle of influ ence, we believe that THE GAME COCK has as potential a field as any of its contemporaries in the great outside world. An agency of college life, its influence is felt by those who are to become community, State and national leaders and, considered in that light, this modest publication increases in its importance and the task of shaping its policies is to be approached reverently and with con secration. We do not propose to allow THE GAMECOCK to become an official registrar of kicks, but shall urge any reforms which appear needed and consistent with the means to secure them. We particularly wish to receive contributions from members of the student body and alumni--even from the faculty-which contain some suggestion of needed change. In this way we wish IHE GAME COCK to become the forum of those whose interests it seeks to serve, so that the opinions of outsiders may be secured while those of the staff are submerged. In short, there shall be no radical deviation from the present policy of the Bird. Asking the support and sympa thetic criticism of students and friends of the University, the new staff enters upon its duties. Preliminary Contests. \Vithin the next month or six wveeks wvill be held p)reliminary con tests for the Davidson dlebate andl he South Carolina Intercollegiate Oratorical Association's annual for ensic meet, b)othl of the final contests being held in the Winthrop college auditorium. While the purpose of the prelimiaries is primarily to select from the student bodly men w~ho will most ably represent the University in these compjetitionls wvith other colleges of this State and the one North Carolina institution above mientionied, they afford an excellent opportunity for men t secure expedience in public sekn which is, perhaps, as essential as innate ability to the mastery of the art. The joint assembly of the two societies has recently passed a reso lution whereby six men from each society are selected to enter the pre liminary contests. This is a step in the right direction and in it the" societies have done their part in getting a number of men interested in intercollegiate contests. But so ciety members should feel the im portance of entering these contests, not under the compulsion of election. but with a view to obtaining neces sary experience. Each man who enters will be bene ited and the University will be strengthened thereby for future con tests. Welcome, Miss Chamberlayne. Although Dr. Chamberlayne strenuously urged that THE GAME cocx take official notice of the ad vent of little Miss Julius Cxsar Cicero Carthagensis Omnes Gallia Mary Gibson Chamberlayne some weeks ago, it was thought best to adhere to the policy of the paper in such matters, the same being not to refer to minors until they are able to speak for themselves. A GAME COCK reporter called at the home of little Miss Chamberlayne this morn ing and was graciously received by that young lady. By a cute little nod of the le-id she assured the re porter that he was at perfect liberty to go ahead and recognize her as a member of the University com mlunity. Although her conversation is con ducted in monosyllables she has no trouble in making her wants known. and, take it from Dr. Chamberlayne. (lire consequences are sure to follow failure to act immediately on her suggestion. The young lady is happy in the possession of her first tooth. She refers to her proud fa ther as "pater."
