this year who iare interested in tennis
than has been in tile past years and

for all available courts. It is any
thing but agreeable inl a game to
have to chase a ball half wav across
the campus. or in waiting to make
a return have the hall bounce any
way but the right (ne on account of

This need not take any great antunt
of time, for only- a small amount of

have been unablhe to dIiscover a cause
or reason sufficient to keep any one
from getting a hook otit when the
library is openi at night.

night if lie is not to issue hooks just

the day ? \Vould it not be just as
well to have a janitor o)enl the li
brary and let those who wish to go
in and read do so ? Surely none
could say that such an arrangement
would be risky, for the men of Caro
lina are men enough to see that the
books and magazines come to no ill
use while in their hands.
We sincerely hope that the proper
authorities will loOk into this, and, if
necessary to change the rules and
regulations governing the use of the
library, do so. Such an arrangement
may have served the pur)ose of our
grand fathers, but the present day
demands are greater than then,
hence we must have adequate ar
rangements to meet the advance of
the time. Forward is the watch
word of the University today, so
let everything he governed by that
word.
Many improvements have beel
made in the library government late
ly to help the stulents, and we hope
that this will follow in the footsteps
of other good tmoves.
It is noted each spring that it is
a hard matter to get enough men to
come out for track. If we consider
the fact that much time is spent in
the track work by those who go out
with only the small chance of a meet
with some other college, is it a mat
ter to wot(Ier at ? It matters not
how good a track man may be he
receives no recognition from the
advisory board or athletic associa
tionl.
It seems that tile offer of a mlon
ograml to be awarded by the advis
ory board wuild be an incentive to
make men comlie out and work, and
itn awarding a monogram for this
work, its value would in no manner
deteriorate.
Oilier colleges (1o not hesitate to
give their track and basket ball men
block letters, thus in(lucing Studleits
to come out, and in so doing such
colleges generallv have the best
teals going.
It is believed that something
shoul(1 be do( ne in order to increase
the interest in athletics other than
football and baseball, and the idea
Of giving a monogram is offdred as
a suggestion for a rele(lv. We
hope that the matter will receive
sotilme consideration oI the patt of
the students anid faculty.

Civic Club Meets.
At the last meeting of the Civic
Club Dr. Mitchell made an able and
enthusiastic talk on, the Balkan sit
nation. \Vith Pov/erful skill he in
terpreted the cornditions existing in
the Balkan States, as regards cause
and effect, from beginning to end.
Dr. Mitchell possesses the rare pow
er of suggesting fine relations be
tween such movements and present
everyday life. H is historical knowl.
edge makes him an authority on
such matters.
There were quite a number pres
ent, and 'certainly each one found
something new to think about as re
gards the Balkan situation.
