With Big Game of Season Only Two Weeks Off, Carolina Squad is Showing Great Form. Each afternoon since the Virginia game Coach Edgerton has been put ting the football squad through some very strenuous practice. The Clemson game is only two weeks off and with coming conflict in view the Gamecock crew are getting their spurs in trim for the fight. The weak spots that showed up in the line in the Virginia game are being worked out, and Carolina will be able to present an invincible wall when they stack up with the "Tigers" here Fair Week. Carolina is very fortunate this year in having experienced men for almost every position, giving her probably the best team she has had since 1902. The back field is com posed of some of the fastest backs that don the gridiron togs anywhere in the South, while it is only neces sary to look over the line for a mo ment to see that they are made of the stuff that counts in football. Tlhe Carolina squad is especially strong on the ends position, being repre sented there by the fast and fierce "Little Hill" and Big Dunn. There is not a faster, headier, harder play ing man to be found anywhere than Dan -leyward at quarter. He is in every play and runs his team like a veteran at the game. VonKoliuitz and Passaillaigue are well known figures in the back field. In Bristow, a new man, Carolina has a valuable player. He is a good ground gainer and plays a great game. In the line Porter and McGowan, last year's stars, are hard propositions for the opposing eleven to solve, and they make themselves felt at all periods of the game. The whole squad is in great form and the prospects for a very success ful season are encouraging. flhe Euphradian Society elected three mlen, who will enter the society p)reliminary for the State Oratorical Contest. Three more will be elected tonight, making a total of six, as per motion of joint assenmbly. The men elected were: M. A. Wright, J. B. Murphy and W. J. Robbins. Three out of the six wvill represent the so ciety in the regular State p)relimii CAROLINA CLASHES WITH FLORIDA TODAY One of the Big Games of the Season Played This After noon at Gainesville, Fla. Gamecocks Well Backed for Winners. The Carolina football team left the city Thursday night for Gaines ville, Fla., where the University of Florida will be met on the gridiron Saturday afternoon. 'he team will reach its destination tomorrow morning and will have an afternoon practice on the Florida grid. Since the game with Virginia on Monday, the line-up has undergone many changes, and will present an entirely different defense and of fense from the aggregation that held Virginia to three touchdowns. Williams has been shifted from guard to end, where he played dur ing the latter part of last year's sea son. Hill will hold down the other extreme, and this pair of huskies are relied on by the coaches to bl;eak up many Florida plays. Hill was slight 1y hurt in the game with Virginia, but has entirely recovered and will be in good trim for the game with the Alligators. Stoney', playing his third year on the 'varsity squad, will fill \Villiams' place at guard. He is a splendid man to have about the pivotal point. Porter will operate about the other guard position, and with Pender grass as a bucking partner, tackle will present a stout defense to charg ing backs. \Vehinann will play left tackle. He is an unusual combina tion of speed and avoirdupois that has caused much trouble for the op position in the only two games played. Dunn, who has played end against Wake Forest and Virginia, has been shifted to quarter, and will manage the Carolina defense against the Floridians. He is a seasoned player and should make a valuable man in this position. Heyward and von Kolnitz will fill the halves and Pas sailaigue will be seen at full. This combination gives an unusually well balanced back field. Sligh, L ,angston, Avinger and Dick wvill be used as substitutes. Gamecocks Showed Great Form. Meeting on the gridiron for the first time in the history 'of the two institutions, the State universities of South Carolina and Virginia clashed on Lanibeth fielk at Charlottsville, Va., last Monday, and when the I smoke of battle cleared away the Virginians had von the initial meet by the score of 1) to o. The game was played on wet grounds before 1,200 students and football fans. All the scoring was done in the first half, and after the Gamecocks had solved the baffling offense of their oppon ents, the defense strengthened per ceptibly and the Carolina goal line was never in danger during the final frames of the game. Straight football was relied on by both teams with few fakes. The forward pass was successffully exe cuted by the Virginians in the second (luarter for a touchdowin, but in the number of times that it was attempt ed during the game, only a few yards were gained by it. The game was called on account of darkness after four minutes of play in the final quarter. The Virginians scored their first touchdown in the first quarter of the game on some brilliant work by Gooch at left half-back, aided by a forward pass to Finlay. Line oplunges for ten and twelve yards with short-end runs were used by the Virginians in this quarter, and these tactics succeeded in putting the pigskin over the goal line a fter seven minutes of play. A goal from touchdown made the score stand 7 to o at the end of the first quarter. The second round saw a brace of touchdowns added, and thereafter scoring ceased. The same big fac tor in Virginia's success, Gooch, was largely instrumental in adding the final twelve points to the score the game. His long end runs at. ? line plunges ate up ground, and after five minutes of play he carried the ball over for the second touch dowvn. HI-s bril liant runs aroundl left-end1 featu-rd BASEBALL, FOOTBALL MATINEES TO BE HELD All Games Away From Home Taken Over the Wires. Sam Latimer, Jr., Elected Manager With W. A. Schiffley as His Assistant. At a meeting of the student body Thursday morning the students de cided to give matinees to all athletic contests held away from home. These matinees will be under the management of Sam Latimer, Jr., with W. A. Schiffley as assistant. This is a new venture on the part of the students, and will mean much to the men on the campus who can not go with the teams on their vari ous trips. The Athletic Association will be asked to co-operate with the students in this movement and lend its support. Carolina Will Give Hop to Cadets. Carolina will give the Citadel boys a hop on Thanksgiving night after the annual Carolina-Citadel football game. 'l'his affair is always looked for ward to with much pleasure. For the past few years Carolina has not been given a chance to show her hospitality, the game always taking place in "The City by the Sea." This year the cards have been turned, so that the game will be played on Davis field. It will be a source of pleasure to have the Cadets in Co lunibia, and Carolina will prove a very hospitable host. ''he dance will be held under the auspices of the German Club. Y. M. C. A. Meeting. At the regular \Vednesday night meeting of the Y. M. C. A. Mr. WVhilden, of the city Y. M. C. A., was speaker. Mr. Whilden is an in teresting talker and entertained his audience while he spoke. A fairly good crowd attended the meeting. The next regular meeting is WVed nesday night, October 23d.
