Attorneys Will be Appointed in Each County to Assist in Raising Fund. An active campaign will be coin nlenced at once by the committee appointed by the South Carolina Bar Association to raise funds for the new law building at the University of South Carolina. A meeting was held in Columbia last week, the committee organized with Legare \'Valker of Summerville as chair man. Mendel L. Smith of Camden and B. Palmer McMaster of Colum bia are the other members of the body. A prominent member of the bar in each county will be appointed by the committee to assist in raising the fund necessary for the construc tion of the building. The students of the law school last year raised by subscription among themselves and the faculty over $4,000. It can be seen more plainly each day that the law school is handicapped by the fact of its not being adequately equipped to carry on the work. The new building will contain a separate room for the law library, class rooms, lecture halls and offices for the faculty of the law school. Mr. Vernon Cook, who took his M. A. here in 1909, was a visitor on the campus (luring the past week. Mr. Cook has been a student of ancient languages, at Marburg, Ger iany,- since he completed his cOurse here. He will shortly return to Ger many to continue his studies. After completing his work Mr. Cook in tends to travel for a year or more. Mayor Gibbes, who is a member of the junior law class, had the fire company to. come down and sprinkle Davis field, to keep the dust down while practice is going on. This is a kindness that means much to the p)layers, for the last fewv afternoons' practice has beein very dlisagreeab)le on account of the (lust. Messrs. Boling, C. M., and Hoff man, \V. V., have left the campus and are now rooming at the city CAROLINA MEETS VIRGINIA MONDAY The Team Has Been Put Through a Hard Week's Practice in Antici pation of Big Game. The men who were fortunate enough to make the trip to Virginia leave today for Charlottesville, where they play thL University of Virginia Monday. This is one of the biggest gaines of the season and is one that means much to Carolina. Our representatives on the grid iron this year are the best that we have had since football came back into our athletics and the students look forward to the outcome with optimistic anticipations. The team is in the pink of con dition and after a week of the hard est work of the season each man feels that he is ready for the biggest fray on the gridiron this year. THE WAKE FOREST GAME. J. L. Greene. Y. M. C. A. CANVASS. '[lie Y. M. C. A. committees are canvassing the campus for new members, both for the Y. M. C. A. and for its various Bible and mission stud(y classes. There are six mission stud(y classes taught by members of the faculty and four Bible study Iclasses led by studecnts. Every man at the University shoul be glad to avail himself of these privileges. When the com mittee comes to your room be sure to sign up) for both a Bible and a mission studvy class. RECEPTION AT COLUMBIA COLLEGE Reception at Columbia College Y. W. C. A. Given Annual Entertain ment. Monday night from eight to ten the Y. \V. C. A. of Columbia Col lege gave their annual reception for the new students. This is one of the most pleasant social events which takes place during the college year and is always looked forward to by the students of Carolina. Quite a number of Carolina men filled the auditorium and made merry with the fair ones over whom Doctor Daniels holds sway until ten o'clock, then the warning wink of the elec tric lights told the ardent youths that the time for merry-making, etc., was over pro tem. Then each reluctantly made his way back to the city, hop ing that such occasions would be numerous and close together. New Department at University. This year for the first time in its history the University has added to its curriculum a course in manual training. One of the large class rooms in DeSaussure College has been fitted up to carry on the work. Mr. Cook of the city school has charge of this department. This comes to fill a recently felt need throughout the State for teach ers who can give manual training in the high schools. It is a particu larly valuable course and should be embraced by all who can find time to take it whether they intend to teach or not. Any man who will take the course will find at the end of the year that he has profited thereby. Mr. Cook is an efficient instructor and intends to make the course inter esting as well as instructive. Progressive Spirit is to Be Willing to Experiment. It will be highly commendable in the student body to not only co operate with the faculty in this mat ter and all others pertaining to the welfare of the University but to take the initiativ'e if necessary. This is not a high school where the stud(ents have to lie led to do things, btut a univ'ersity compo)csedl of men who are capab)le of thinking and reasoning what is best for the insti tution they intendl to make their alma mater. 'What are you going to (10 about it ? The faculty will listen to you. A CONFLICT WITH EXAMINATIONS Other Arrangements Must Be Made for Mid-year Quizes. National Corn Exposition and Exam inations Conflict. Owing to the fact that the Corn Exposition is to be leld in Columbia during the week which has been scheduled by the University for mid year examinations, the faculty has decided to make some other arrange ments in regard to exams. Dr. Mitchell's suggestion to have the first period of examination just before the Christmas holidays is a good one for several reasons. It will not be as hard to prepare for this exam because of the small amount of text-book work the stu dents will have to have up on, then when the students leave for the holi days they will not have to think of some work they ought to do during this period of pleasantry in order to catch up. Everybody will be able to come back and make a new start with all of the future before them and little of the past to worry about. Many of the schools throughout the State have the year divided into three terms and it has proven a suc cess. Have You Subscribed to The Game cock? It is necessary for THE GAME cOCK to have at least 400 subtc:ibers in order to run throughout the year, and it is up to the students to see that this number is gotten and more. This is a college publication for the men of Carolina, and it is up to you to back it. There are some men on the cam ptls who have not subscribed and are indifferent about it. It is an easy matter to see where the publication would be if everybody looked at it in the light of these men.
