Nelson Frierson. Professor Frierson was born into the well known Frierson family at Stateburg, S. C. in 1874. Both his father and grand father were graduated from South Carolina College, the latter being first honor man in the class of 1837. Prof. Frierson graduated from Por ter Military Academy in 1893 ; from Hobart College, Geneva, N. Y., in 1896, and from the Law School of Columbia University in 1899. After graduation from the last institution Professor Frierson was a successful attorney in Buffalo, N. Y., until his election to a professorship in the University of South 'Carolina in 1908. Professor Frierson is a law teacher of exceptional training and ability as is evidenced by the fact that he is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and for the six years previous to his coming to South Carolina was a teacher in the Buffalo Law School. His work at Carolina has been all that such a record predicted. His ability to distinguish cases and the clearness of his reasoning com mend him at once to each of his stu dents, and the high plane to which he always points the aspirant for legal honors has won him the respect and admiration of all. Elbert Marion Rucker. Born on March 15, 1866. to El bert Marion Rucker and Sarah Francis Whitner in Anderson, S. C., a son, who, by reason of character, ability and attainment, has become a member of the law faculty of the University of South Carolina. Pro fessor Rucker comes from a family noted for its legal talent. His father was graduated from the Harvard Law School but never saw fit to practice. His cousin. Joseph Rucker Lamar, is now a member of the Supreme Court of the United States. His grandfather, Hon. J. N. Whit ner, was one of the life law judges of South Carolina, while his mater nal uncles, Maj. J. H. Whitner and the Hon. B. F. WVhitner, were law yers of recognized ability. Prof. Rucker received his A. B. degree from South Ca rolin a College in 1885 and LL. B. in 1887. From 1893-'97 he wvas assistant United States attorney. IHe servedl Ander son county in the H-ouse of Repre sentatives from 1899 to 1910, b)eing for several years chairman of the \Vays and Means Committee. I-I w~as elected to this lawv faculty in 1910. As a teacher in the Univer sity Prof. Rucker has been very suc cessful. 1-is attractive, v'igorous p)ersonality and wvide experience have endeared him to ev'ery man wvith wvhom he has come in contact, 1b0t1 within and wvithout the class room. IHe is a gentleman and scholar of the old( school. LAW .MEN AND JOURNALISM. Students of Blackstone Have Handled Pen. The members of the law school have played an important part in the journalistic affairs of this session. They have always been ready to lend a helping hand in the develop ment of the Carolinian, the Garnet and Black, and the GAMECOCK. On the Carolinian staff during the year, J. A. Mace and M. C. Foster, of the junior law- class, have given their efforts. On the staff of the Garnet and Black, H. G. Goggans, junior law, is advertising manager; T. S. McMillan, junior law, is one of the literary editors, and F. W. Cappel mann, junior law, is law editor. The present business manager of the GAMECOCK is J. P. Evans, of the junior law class. On the J. B. Mitchell staff of the "Bird," the fol lowing law men served: C. E. Black, law editor, and F. Wn. Cap pelmann, student body editor. On the L. K. Hagood staff: M. M. Johnson, local editor: J. B. Mur phy, student body editor; E. P. Guerard, Jr., and M. A. Shuler, law editors. On the S. L. Latimer staff : J. B. Murphy, associate editor; M. A. Shuler, assistant editor; M. C. Foster, law editor. On the present W. V. Hoffman staff: W. D. Bar nett, law editor, and J. B. Murphy, student body editor. The law men took a great inter est this year in the organization of the Southern College Press Asso ciation for the development of jour nalism in this section. J. B. Mur phy of the junior law class was on the committee of arrangements: C. T. Graydon presided at the open ing session, while F. W. Cappelmann delivered the address of welcome on behalf of the student body. On the Scribes the law men are represented by Alan Johnstone, Jr., and F. WVm. Cappelmann. Officers of Law Classes.
