The carnival l The carnival's the thing, wherein we caught-well, it isn't giving away family, or at least "pal" secrets, to say that the pro ceedg almost reached the hundred mark, for which we are truly grate ful. Really, that "Suffragette car nival" was mighty good. Perhaps it is because the one-time fun-loving disposition of the so-called "Caro lina element" has resolved itself into a phlegmatic attitude toward all such frivolity that we did not see more of that element present. We are mighty sorry they missed the fun, and we hope that those who did come enjoyed the shows as much as we did. Two graduating recitals have been given recently in our chapel; Miss Knight's last week and Miss Wil liamson's on the twenty-ninth. We are rather proud of our music de partment, and to those who were fortunate enough to hear these re citals no further word of praise is necessary. Miss Rosa Green will give her recital on the third of May. Miss Green is a pupil of Mr. Charles. At a recent meeting of our stu dents Miss Roberta Aldrich was elected chairman of the association for the coming year. We believe that Miss Aldrich has the support of every girl in college, and that she will be a strong power for 'good in all the workings of the association. Just a congratulatory word to the new GAMECOCK staff. We wish these officers every success in their efforts to make THE GAMECOCK crow as lustily, and, if you please, victoriously as it has in the past few months. A. G. McC. Track Meet. The State high school track meet was pulled off last Saturday, May 4, in a downpour of rain. The clay promised to be an ideal one and dur ing the morning the preliminary events were pulled off without a hitch, but in the afternoon the clouds poured down rain in torrents. Westminster carried off the hon ors, winning for the second consecu tive tine the handsome trophy 'cup given by Sylvan Bros. Yorkville won second. All the teams made a creditable showing and it shows that a good deal of jinterest has been. taken in training the teams. The scores wei-e as follows: West minster 21, Yorkville 13, 'Furman Fitting school xi1, Cross Anchor io, Hickory Grove 7, Seneca, Easley, Latta 6 each, Summerville 5, H-eath Springs 3, Camden. Florence x each. Two articles, "The History of the Law School," and "Law Men in De bate and Oratory," will appear next week. Lack of space causes' this nnstpnenmenit COBURN PLAYERS HERE. Splendid Organization Pleased Large Audience. The Coburn players, playing "The Canterbury Pilgrims," entertained a large audience on Gibbes' green Friday night. This is a high class company, giving open air plays. The audience of students and town peo ple were highly pleased with the performance. Field Day on Wednesday Next. Wednesday afternoon will be field day for the Carolina track team. The following are the prizes offered and the events: ioo-yard dash, collar and cuff box; 220-yard dash, straw hat; 440-yard run, U. S. C. seal watch fob; 88o-yard run, tie clasp; mile, one fountain pen; broad jump, one pair white trousers; hammer throw, one-half dozen pair socks. The prizes for the high jump, hurdle and pole vault have not yet been announced, but there will be a prize for each event. LAW MEN AND SCHOLARSHIP. Interesting Record of Attainment in Excellence. That a high grade of scholarship is maintained among the members the law school may best be shown by the table below. These grades apply to the mid-year examinations, a "Double Star" denoting a percentage from 95 to 1oo per cent.; a "Single Star" from 90 to 95 per cent.; a "First" from 85 to 9o per cent.
