CONCERTS ARE PLANNED BY MUSICAL CLUBS Glee Club and Orchestra Will Visit Several South Carolina Cities This Month. The University Glee Club and Orchestra will leave on the i8th for a short trip, on which they will entertain the lovers of music at Converse College (Spartanburg), Greenville, Abbeville and Green wood on the evenings of the i8th, 19th, 20th and 21st, respectively. There will be about ten men in the group besides those in the or chestra, making a total of sixteen. The names of those who will take the trip are: Blake, Reeves, White, Sligh, Dozier, Perkins, D., Mc Crady, McGowan, Paul, Lumpkin, Monash, Black, Cook, Seay, Hen nig and Perkins, L. This tour bids fair to be one of the most successful of its kind in the history of the University. In fact, it has been only during the past few years that the University has been privileged to have an or chestra. With the addition of the .rchestra and such select talent composing the Glee Club, Carolina can expect extended praise and fame. Garnet and Black Goes to Press at an Early Date. The Garnet and Black, the annual publication by the students of the University, is worthy of and should have the co-operation of every man in college. It is far from an easy task that the members of the staff have on their hands and their load will be much lighter if every man will lend his aid. The editor-in-chief has given notice that all material for the annual must be in his hands by Thursday night. They are not only willing but also glad to accept any sketches, poems, plays, stories, etc., which may be offered to them. The editors hope to make this issue of the Garnet and Black the best in the history of the institution, but that will only be possible through the willingness to contribute. Write something, whatever merit it may have, and if it is accepted by the staff you will feel proud to see your sketch in the contents. Gonzales Contest to be Held on Night of May 8.. On May 8th the Gonzales Ora torical contest will he held. The speakers in this contest wvill be: From the Clariosophiic Society T. S. Macmillan and Hloyt Watson; from the Euphradian Society, J. B. Murphy, F. WV. M. Woodrow andl Joe Wrightson. There will p)rob)ably be twvo other speakers from the 'student body J. B. Mitchell andl M. S. Brohn. THE SICK Clyde Davis is at work again after an illness of seven weeks. At present Messrs. Razor, Varn, Weinberg, M. M. Manning, Wil liams, George, and Evans are con fined in the infirmary. Fortunately none are seriously ill and will be able, in a few (lays, to resume their work in college. The State Praises "Sketches" of J. Broadus Mitchell. The State of Thursday carried the following story concerning "Sketches" by Broadus Mitchell, a University student: "A number of the friends of Broadus Mitchell, the son of the president of the University of South Carolina, are in receipt of an attractive booklet, the title of wlhicli is 'Sketches.' The contents are a dozen or so charming studies. In some instances these are merely artistic descriotions of certain phases of nature, such as 'Even ing,' 'Darkness,' 'Moonlight ;' others are built up on the lines of the sonnet, and turn on a certain in cident. In fact, these last are son nets in prose. Some of this class are 'The Mirror,' 'In the Attic,' 'In Dreams.' 'I'hey are all very brief, and show a most decided effort to be scrupulously true to the subject in hand. "The dainty volume, in varying shades of brown and creme, is dedi cated to 'The Ineffable Princess,' and if she is as the dedication de scribes her this literary offering should be most acceptable, for it breathes of youth and faith and artistic literary ability. "Mr. Mitchell is now in his junior year at the University. He was for merly editor and associate editor, respectively, of Tna GAMECOCK, and still contributes to both TniH GAMECOCK and The Carolinian, the first-named being the weekly and the last the monthly magazine of the University. "But, desiring real experience in A. II.
