VARSITY MATERIAL LOOKS MIGHTY FINE Early Season Dope Says the Fastest Bunch of Chicks in Carolina's History Will be in Action. Jas. G. Driver, baseball cbach, has started work with his "Game cocks." Although the weather is too bad to be out on Davis field, practice can go on, thanks to the spacious gymnasium. The work for the first week will be light, so that the men will be able to get the "kinks" out of their arms and get on to the way a ball feels. There is a bunch of varsity men out as well as a goodly number of new men who look good for the team. Owing to the assortment of high-class material there is to choose from, the men who make the team will have to work for their position C. and show gilt-edge form. With Mr. Driver to coach and instil "pep" into the team, it is safe that Caro lina's one best bet is that she is going to have the greatest aggrega tion of "Chicks" ever let loose on the Davis field diamond. Intercollegiate Magazine Praises Wilson League of College Men. The following taken from the College Topics, (University of Vir ginia) will be of interest to the men of the University of South Carolina. The mother club of the Woodrow Wilson League of College Men is located here: "T'he Intercollegiate Magazine for March carries two articles of especial interest to Wilson support ers among college students. In an article entitled 'College Presidents and the Coming Campaign,' Mr. Lindsay Rogers discusses at length the part that the Wilson League of College Men will play in the coming campaign. The constitution of the organization is given in full, and an attempt is made to indicate in num bers the potential political strength of the league. In the department called 'Little of Everything,' in an article under the caption, 'Wilson That's All,' more specific informa tion is given as to the membership and officers of the league. In an editorial of the same number further favorable mention of the organiza tion is made. The league has its northern headquarters at the Uni v'ersity of Virginia." MOOT COURT On account of Mr. Knap)p's lec ture last Wedniesday night the meet ing of Moot Court wvas postponed. The same case wvill be triedl at the next meeting, and a criminal case is set for one week hence, condulctedl by Juniors. BASKET BALL TEAM CLOSES GREAT SEASON Carolina Quintette Worked With Pep and Ginger and Made a Fine Showing. The games played with New berry and Wofford during the last week ended the basket ball season for this session. Notwithstanding the fact that both of those games were lost, a review of the results of the several games played during the past season shows a record-breaking growth in the efficiency of the team. Previous to this season basket ball has seemed to play a minor part in the athletic life of the University. Somehow it has climbed up, all at once, to a very important position. In fact, the fellows look forward to a game of basket ball with almost as much interest as they (1o to a base ball or football game. The reason for this is, of course, due to the "snap" and energy put into the game by the team. Jas. 'T. Driver, coach, found out that there were "goods" at Carolina out of which a hustling basket ball squad could be moulded, and up to the present time he has succeeded pretty well in using that material. It would be interesting to note the work (lone by the team (luring the past season. Of course victory did not follow the team at all times, but, considering the comparative strength of the teams played, Caro lina has no reason to feel in any way dismayed at the results. It will not be long before another season opens. In the meantime the work will be carried on in the gym nasium. With a plenty of practice, Carolina will doubtless put forth a winning team. Every man on the campus should help this good work on in every way possible. "Co operation and unity," to use Dr. Mitchell's expression, is the thing that moves the world. Southern Preliminary to Contest Held on April 10. On Wednesday evening, April ioth, the preliminary for the Soutlh ern Oratorical contest will be held in chapel. The speakers in this contest will be: Alan Johnstone, Jri., andl F. \V. Cappelmanni of the Euphradian Society, andl F. K. Vas sey andl M. M. Foster of the Clario sophic Society. Thue b)est orator will be selected to rep)resent the University at tihe Southerni Oratorical contest. G. G. Christopher Elected on Game cock Staff. Dr. George Wauchope Lectures To day at Noon at Davis College. Dr. George Armstrong \Vauchope speaks at noon today in his lecture room at Davis College. This will be a continuance of Dr. Wauchope's course on the short story in the South. By special request several Uncle Remus stories will be read, after which Finchy Rutherford, an aged negro, will be introduced to the audience. -Ie will tell some old stories of long ago which are noc in print. Finchy is a good story-teller and the audience has a real treat in store for them. Dr. A. C. Moore Lectured in Chapel Thursday Evening. The lecture of last Thursday evening was given by Dr. A. C. Moore to a large audience. His lecture was based on a very timely subject, "The Creation of New Plant Forms." Dr. Moore traced the lines of improvement in corn, cotton, timothy hay, and the sugar beet, as well as making reference to several other crops. The economic results coming from the improve ment of plants was made very evi dent by him. Dr. Moore is an authority on the subject of plant breeding, being himself a successful experimenter along such lines. His lecture was elaborately illustrated with stereoptican slides. No one regrets spending an hour in hearing such lecturers as Dr. Moore. 'His lectures are always in teresting and instructive. Interest is Shown in Approaching State Track Meet. Everybody is looking forward with keen interest to the intercol legiate track meets to be held on Davis field about the last of April or first of May. These meets and the present outlook for baseball will mean that Davis field will be a busy spot during the entire spring. Nothing very definite can be said regarding the progress of these various meets at present. Suffice it to say that everybody is doing all in his power to make each one a success. The University is glad to be the center for such gatherings, since she realizes her duty to the State to fur ther interests along athletic lines. Then, too, a larger place of service is offered in the intercollegiate meet which she gladly accepts. Psychology Class Attended Clinic at State Hospital for Insane. Prof. Morse's class in p)sychlology attendled a clinic at the State Hlos p)ital for the Insane last Saturday. Two very instructive hours were sp)ent within the asylum wvalls and the class left wvith a much better grasp of the subject. D)r. J. Wv. Babcock, head of the hospital, and his entire corps of able assistants did everything in their power to make the meeting a suc cess andl their efforts were certainly applreciatedl by the stud(ents wvho were so fortuante as totunl. Dr. Patterson Wardlaw Has Returned From Conference at St. Louis. Dr. Patterson Wardlaw of the department of education has re turned from a trip to St. Louis, where he attended a conference of the superintendents' department of the National Educational Associa tion. About 1,400 delegates, cream of the educators of America, were in attendance and the meeting was a splendid success. Dr. Wardlaw attended the meet ing as representative of the Univer sity of South Carolina. Euphradians Will Give Five Dollars to Chinese Sufferers. The Euphradian Society, at its meeting last Saturday night, passed a motion to appropriate five dollars to the Chinese famine fund. The people of China are in a very desti tute state.
