DAVIDSON DEBATE ON MONDAY NIGHT Contest to Be Held at Rock Hill Next Week. UNIVERSITY SENDS STRONG AGGREGATION Winthrop College Auditorium Will be Used and it is Expected That Numbers Will Attend. The intercollegiate debate with Davidson College will be held in Rock Hill on Monday night. The query is: "Resolved, That it is to the best interests of American munici palities to own and operate their electric light, gas and traction plants." The debate will be held in \Vinthrop College auditorium and a very large audience is expected. Many from both States will be there. Many students from each of the col leges are going. The student body of Winthrop will attend and their presence will be an incentive for the speakers to put forth their best effort. J. Roddy, mayor of Rock Hill, will preside and will present the speakers. Music for the even ing will be furnished by the Glee Club of Vinthrop College. The loving cup w1hich will be pre sented to the college which wins has been received in Rock Hill. It is a trophy well worth debating for and will be highly prized by the winner. It has engraved upon it, "Carolina Davidson debate, March 4, 1912. Awarded by the citizens of Rock Hill." The citizens of Rock Hill are taking an active interest in this contest and have extended a most cordial welcome to the two colleges to their city. Students Heard C. A. Buchner Last Wednesday Night. On Wednesday night Mr. C. A. Buchner, secretary of the Olympia Mills Y. M. C. A., addressed the students of the University in Flinn Hall. Mr. Buchner's subject was "The Force of Habit." He showed clearly and convincingly and with many ap)t illustrations just how true it is that we are all creatures of habit. An act once performed, be it good or bad, makes the repetiticai of that same act easier, and each time it is performed it becomes easier to do it again. "\Ve make," said Mr. Buchner, "as it wvere, 'trunk-lines'.in our brains and in our bodies, and these trunk-lines dIeter mine in large measure our lives." The closing thought was that the only effective way to prevent the formation of evil habits wvas the formation of positively good ones, and above all the keeping of the soul pure and the conscience clear by contact with Jes Chs. C. F. W. C. F. W. has been the scene of quite a: good deal of gaiety lately. Some features of it, as the Junior Senior, for instance, you of the University already know something about. We don't know how you feel about the reception, but we can only say that we hope you had as much fun as we did. The Juniors are somewhat elated over their seem ing success. It was a pleasure for them thus to honor the Seniors and they are glad if some fev enjoyed a little' conversation-be it dilatory or'otherwise-in C. F. W.'s parlors. We had a lot of real fun Monday night at a "baby show," given by the old Y. W. C. A. cabinet to the new. Perhaps it will interest you to know that our new Y. W. C. A. officers have been elected and' the new cabinet chosen. Perhaps it won't. Any way, it's a fact, and to celebrate the occasion, a baby show was given. It may sound silly, but really, we enjoyed it thoroughly. Lemonade, fruit and candy (stick) were "handed around" and they tasted awfully good. Such evenings devoted to right down fun are al ways welcomed heartily. (Note The "baby show" was to carry out the idea of the "baby cabinet," which is just entering in on the Y. NV. C. A. year. Catch the drift?) The installation services were held last Sunday evening. The new pres ident is Miss Adele Milling, class of 1913. We wish her every success. We are sorry we have not been able to write to TiHE GAMECOCK more regularly, but the past few weeks have been peculiarly crowded with some of us and it has. been im possible to do our part by the "Bird." We hope, however, to do better next time. A. G. Mc. Civic Club Held a Most Successful Meeting. The Civic Club held a most suc cessful meeting Thursday nighr. After the business session the pro gramme was taken tip. F. R. Hem ingway read a well-prepared paper on "Is Bryan's Influence Waning?" The speaker stressed the grip which the great Nebraskan still has upon the minds of Americans. J. B. Mitchell sp)oke on "The Short Bal lot," giving an able outline of the object and wvorkings of this p)lan. Considerable discussion was stirred up as to the real democracy of the reforrn. The policy of the Civic Club was dcCidedl upon at the meeting to be hereafter mainly the study of cur rent politics through the magazines of the day. The p)lan is to assign meritab)le articles of present interest for reading, summarizing and report and thus to make the club "a clear ing hou'se" for political ideas.
