The time for this money to be paid is long past due, and the University is anxious to collect all the money as soon as pos sible. The treasurer, Miss S. F. Fick ling, has been sick and unable to be at the office for the past week. Miss Fickling has returned now and it is urged that all delinquents either pay at once or notify the office when they may be expected to do so. Dramatic Club. The University should have a dramatic club, not one in name only but one which will really accom plish some work. The Garrick Club was organized last year, falling flat and resulting in an absolute failure. There are few large universities without a dramatic club. It is an important phase of college life. It is true it takes much hard work, but the results fully repay. We would like to see an active dramatic club at Carolina and hope that a good one will be organized before many weeks pass by. Woodrow Wilson League. The Woodrow Wilson League officials are planning a large public meeting in the near future. Prom inent speakers from towvn wvill be heard and student talent wvill also be (displayed. This political club in colleges is the novel idea of 191 I andl has be'en the talk of many a town. Loud commendation and strong condemnation have both been exp)ressedl. The meeting will surely be of interest. Dr. James McBryde. Dr. James McBryde, alumnus of the University, former president of the institution and one of Carolina's most distinlguishedl sons, is visiting his (laughter, Mrs. Gadsden Guig nardl in Columbia. Dr. McBiryde in troduced Mr. Gaillard Hunt on Tuesday and at this time many of the students had the pleasure of seeing and greeting him. To have in our midst a visitor who is such a splendid example of the work of South Carolina College, now the University, is inspiring to every man of, this institution. Dr. McBryde has been at Virginia Poly.. technic Institute, Blacksburg, Va., where he has been a valuable influ ence on the young men of that school. The University is rejoicing in his visit to Columbia and THE GAMECOCK hopes that every man of Carolina will have the distinct pleas tire of meeting this charming old gentleman during his stay here. Dr. Joynes Writes of Spanish as a Valuable Language. To the Editor of THE GAMECOCK: Of ourse I read THE GAME CocK as part of my recreation and of my education, and I read it with especial attention as the mouthpiece of the students of the University, whose opinions and feelings, even where ' I may not approve, I most profoundly respect. In TiHiE GAMECOCK of Feb. 17 is a letter from our sterling friend, Victor E. Rector, in which he em phasizes the value of a knowledge of the modern languages, and especial ly of Spanish. This leads me to indulge in a reminiscence, which may be of interest. In 1866 I was called to the chair of modern languages in Washing ton College, Va. In my first inter view with Gen. Robert E. Lee, the president, among the first questions he asked was whether I was pre pared to teach Spanish. He ex pressed the opinion that for geo graphical and political reasons Span ish was destined to become, prac tically, the most important of the modern languages for our people. Of course he did not foresee the additional reasons which have since so greatly increased this importance, Iut I venture to relate this conver sation to THE GAMECOCK with the expression of my regret that Span ish seems to be relatively so little appreciated in our University, and with the hope that a sense of its great and rapidly growing practical importance may cause this language -here so well taught-to be more largely elected by our studlents.
