Needs From Her College Men" was
the subject of an address delivered
. by Prof. W. K. Tate in Flinn Hall
last Vednesday evening. Prof.
c 'Tate, as State Supervisor of Rural
C Schools, has become familiar, as few
men are, with the peculiar )roblems
1 and needs of this State, and his ad
3 dress Wednesday evening was a
6 clear statement of facts, gathered at
( first hand, concerning conditions as
he has found them in the rural dis
tricts, as well as in the towns and
cities.
In beginning, Prof. Tate said that
a man becomes great at heart before
he does those things which win for
him the approbation of his fellows.
Every single great act represents
years, )erhal)s, of moral and spirit
ual growth. By exercise of will, he
slowly acquires those characteristics
which enable him at last to perform
some great work which claims the
attention of men. Not the least
function of a university is to give
to its members that resolution of
)urpose which will some day express
itself in the consummation of great
achievements.
The s)eaker referred to the im
provement of this State's roads as a
great field for social service and
showed how vast was this field when
he asserted that better roads would
mean better church and school at
tendance, easier trans)ortation of
farm products to places of market
and a growth of community life.
Another great field for the college
man who would serve his State lies
in demonstrating to the agricultural
population the value of diversified
farming. Cause them to reduce their
cotton acreage by one-third and you
will abolish the great waste which
annually results fromi the fiber's fall

ers. Not only that, but you will
make possib)le the regular at tend
anice upon school of thousands of
children who are now emp)loyedl until
the first of January in gathering the
cr01).
But the greatest field of all open
to him who earnestly seeks to serve,
says Prof. T[ate, is ini seeking to give
this State a cleani administration of
its government. That college man
wvho travels over this State n)reach
ing a gospel of truth-the whip
from which all demagogue curs will
slink-will perform a service, vital,
real and perimaienit.
Examinations
As tradition will have it we again
find one of the semi-annual night
mares creeping on us. Procrasti
nation, which seems to be our na
ture, has proven to be predominant
and many of us find ourselves in
abnost utter helplessness. During
the next week many will be endeav
oring, by consistent cramming, to
accumulate enough knowledge in
the various studies to make a pass
ing mark on the examinations,
which are only one week off. rhese
examinations that the authorities of
this institution persist in holding
twice every session, fail in their
purpose as a test of knowledge.
Cramming has no real value for
a student. Its aim is only for tem
porary kcnowledge and all is forgot
ten after the exams are over. This
should be eliminated and the accu
inulation of knowledge more
equally distributed throughout the
town. It can be done only by
changing the present system of ex
amining. Many times has a better
plan been suggested, but it has al
ways met opposition squarely in the
face.
The plan of grading each student
during the term and exempting
from examination all who make a
certain grade would prove the most
eflicient. This would be an incen
tive for incessant worik du-ng the
term and the danger of physical in
jury from over study just before
examinations would be greatly di
minished.
