Yule-tide.
Christmas! The recurrence of this
supreme lay of the year brings back
memories of the triumphal songs of
the past. These echoes vibrate
every fiber of our beings. It brings
memories of the past when the home
was filled vith the furtive rustling
of paper parcels and whispered
secrets, which caused the tensions of
anxiety to reach such a height that
the approaching night wvas impa
tiently waited for. Christmas, as
some one has said, "was a day of
unique romantic quality, a tonic,
and curative of all ills. A (lay in
whichN we eat and drink vithout any
thought of nutrition or reasonable
ness, fear or shame, in the sheer,
abandoned ecstacy of celebration."
Then the coming of the Prince of
Peace was celebrated in its truest
sense. Scepticism had not entered
into our beings and faith was su
preme. But nowN, it has lost some
of. its vitality. Leading periodicals
think the hal)ors of the idealists, such
as the philosophers and geologists
of the nineteenth century, have
brought about this abominable scep
tical age.
However, Christmas continues to
come and the festivities are shared
by all. As college students the holi
dlays wve are about to enjoy should
have a greater significance than in
the past. TPhose wvho have imbibed
the spirit of Carolina for twvo or
three years realize w~hat they owve
to this institution ; perhap)s the
Freshman does not. Remember
that each one of you wvill be a repre
sentative of Carolina wvhen at home.
Think of this and do not let your
code of ethics plunge into a pentum
bra andl do any act that would in
j-ure the name of this institution.
If so the very purpose for wvhich the
authorities are striving for will
Improvements Needed.
We all can recall the efforts that
were made last year to get appro
priations for a new auditorium at
this institution and the intense inter
est that every student took in it.
We realize still the necessity of a
new chapel and a new dormitory.
The dormitory must come. The
present growth of this institution
demands it. The movement recently
launched by the law students to
erect a new law building and the
success it has gaine.d is much in
evidence as to what the student
body can accomplish when they
work shoulder to shoulder. The
time is not far when the assembly
will again meet to decide on this
important question. Let each one
of you aid in this with more deter
mined vengeance than ever. Many
of the legislators and senators are
alumni of this institution and have
their alma mater at heart. During
your vacation refrain from burying
yourself in semi-innocuous desue
tude, but be up and doing. Get in
touch with these law-makers, tell
them the need of a doimitory and
auditorium here, and do anything
to get them in favor of the move
ment.
The Citadel Game.
A lette- has just been received
at this institution in regard to the
dleplorable affair of Thanksgiving
during the Carolina-Citadel game.
It is very gratifying, and is wel
coned news to every Carolina stu
dent to learn that enmity does not
exist between these two institutions
and that .the athletic relations will
probably not be severed. The let
ters to our manager making such
statements, we understand, were
without authority.
The Law School.
No one can fail to have the ut
most and most complete faith in the
early success of the lav building
canlaign. The committee is show
ing a spirit of activity and zeal that
warms the hearts of all those inter
ested in this most desirable plan.
Co-operation and self-sacrifice
this is the policy of the committee.
'lheir creed may be formulated
thus: "Work, work, talk, talk."
In season and out of season, the
law students are spreading their
ideal for the law school before the
peop)le of the State of South Caro
lina. Nine hundredl letters have
b)een sent to various alumni, the
memb)ers of the bar of South Caro
lina and other public-spirited citi
zens. The faculty of the lawv school
and the president of the University
have endorsed the movement in
forceful terms. The president of
the State Bar Association has prom
ised to bring the project to the close
attention of the Association at its
meeting in February. Plans are in
formation to present the scheme at
the alumni mieetinig on Founders'
Day. Monday night the Richland
County alumni g-ave the cmmitte
their unanimous endorsement. The
spirit of self-sacrifice is being splen
didly shown in the determination of
the law students and many academic
students to work for the fund dur
ing their Christmas vacation. Vari
ous prominent citizens in different
towns and cities of the State have
consented to serve as/"sponsors"
for the movement in introducing
the representatives to prospective
donors and in giving the movement
proper publicity.
THE GAMECOCK is much inter
ested in the law building. The edi
tor feels that the movement marks
a new epoch in the history of the
University, the period of men work
ing zealously for Carolina while in
the institution as well as after grad
uation. The students, law and aca
demic, are urged to do their utmost
to push the plan. Let the opening
of 1912 register great and substan
tial increase in the fund. All suc
cess to the law students in their
worthy enterprise which means so
much to Carolina.
Messrs. Mills Bereaved by Loss of
Their Moth6r.
Dr. J. E. Mills and Mr. W. P.
Mills have the sympatlgy of the
entire student body in the death of
their mother, which occurred in
Camden Monday night. The mes
sage announcing this sad occurrence
was received Monday night about 9
o'clock and they left immediately
for their home. Since their coming
to Carolina they have won the
affection of the entire student body
and.every member of it feels deeply
the loss which they have suffered.
The Lyric wishes all a merry Xmas.
