o'clock,'the. party, minus Whittier and
McSween, made a trip in a hack to
Natural Bridge, a distance of fourteen
miles from Lexington. It was a three
hour ride, but the scenery was beauti
ful. and the time was passed pleasantly
enough. An excellent dinner was
serve(l imniediately on arrival at the
Natural Bridge Hotel. After dinner,
the party visited the bridge, which was
indeed a wonderful sight. Several
tried their "whips" at throwing stones
over the bridge, but all without suc
cess. A few of the party brought
away some specimens of limestone for
Dr. Twitchell's laboratory. The re
Ourn trip was begun at 4:30, and at
'Vlark the boys were back in Lexing
ton. The night was spent in the bar
racks at the V. M. I.
Monday's game Was, perhaps, the
miost disappointing of all. Although
our team was unable to hit the Vir
' ginia pitcher. the runs of the home
C team were dlue largely to the slope of
the field. This is a miserable spot on
which to play A baseball game. Three
of V. M. T.'s four runs were made on
drives which rolled down the hill. All
this is very discouraging to a team
totally unaccustomed to it. and it is
safe to say that on the proper sort of
field the result would likely have been
different.
At 6:45, Monday afternoon, the
team began its journey homeward. A
coul)le of hours were spent between
trains at Lynchburg, and, at 11:10, the
men boarded the Pullman for Colum
bia. The team reached home at 8:30
Tuesday morning, and by the time this
account has gone to press, will have
left again to meet Davidson at Green
wood.
Thus ended a very interesting.
though not altogether successful. trip.
The team thoroughly appreciates the
many kindnesses and considerations of
Manager Wright.
Much fun was indulged in at the
expense of (lifferent members of the
party. It is reported that one fellow,
on reading the directions in his room
at a certain hotel, "two rings, ice
water," placed his pitcher under the
bell and pressed the button twice.
Take Sam Owen's advice and eat
grape nuits.
In an exciting track meet the other
day Virginia lost to Pennsylvania by
the score of 78 points to 38. The inter
collegiate champions won eleven
points, live seconds, and eight thir(s;
while Virginia won two firsts, eight
seconds. and four thirds. The track
wt'as slow on account of 'heavy rains,
but the events were highly creditable.
"Mrs. Caswell, while you wvere in
Venice did you see the 13ridge of
Sighs ?"
"Oh, yes ; T saw what they called
that.. IBut, my land, T've seen bridges
ten tinmes its size without ever going

"I don't like my new gowvn very
wvell," said the young lady. "The mia
terial is awfully pretty, and( the style
is all right, but it needs something to
implrove the shape of it."
"Why," suggested her dearest
