Y. M. C. A. NOTES.
The third of the series of sacred
concerts was given in Flinn -lall on
Sunday night last. The orchestra,
lately organized, was present in full
force, and their selections were one
of the chief features of the evening.
Mr. Seay, of the Columbia High
School, very kindly played the ac
conpaniment. Mr. MlcCreight's flute
solo was an attractive part of the
programme, while Mrs. Twitchell
was warmly encored after playing
Handel's "Largo." One member of
the quartet was unfortunately pre
q vented by sickness from being pres
, ent, but we look forward with much
S pleasure to hearing them at the next
6 concert, Sunday, March 26th.
Oi next Sunday night, March 19,
at 8 o'clock, in the Frst Presbyterian
4 church, Dr. Henry Louis smith,
president of Davidson College, will
address the students of the Uni
versity and the young ladies of the
two women's colleges on the sub
ject: "The Twentieth Century and
Its Call -to the Young Manhood and
Young Womanhood of the Church."
Dr. Smith is a splendid speaker an(
this service will certainly be one of
the most helpful in the series so far
held. The seats on the right of the
main aisle down stairs will be re
served for the University students
through the courtesy of the officials
of the church.
Mr. R. Beverly H-erbert, an alum
nus of the University and president
of the Columbia Chamber of Con
merce, 'spoke at the regular Y. M.
C. A. nieeting on Wednesday night.
His theme was "Obedience to Law."
By striking statistics he showed the
great disregard of law which exists
in the State, and urged his hearers
to do all they could when they went
back to their several communities to
build up a strong public sentiment
in favor of an exact obedi, ence of the
law, for it is to our college mien that
one must look to find the leaders of
the public opinion of the future.
In a full dress suit any man can
present a stiff front to the world.

Oliver Herford once entered a
doubtful-looking restaurant and or
dered a lamib chop. After a long de
lay the waiter return,ed, bearing a
plate on which reposed a dab of
mashed )otatoes and a much over
done chop of microscopical propor
tions with a remarkable long and
slender rib attached. This the
waiter set down before him and then
hurried away.
"See here," called Herford, "I or
dered a chop."
"Yessir," replied the man, "there
it is.
"Ah, so it is," replied Herford,
peering at it closely, "I thought it
was a crack in the plate."
A man, accompanied by his wife,
visited a merchant tailor to order a
suit of clothes. The couple differed
as to the material and manner of
making, and the wife lost her tem
per.
"Oh, well," she said, turning
away, "please yourself; I suppose
you are the one who will wear the
clothes."
"Well," observed the husband
meekly, "I didn't suppose you'd
want to wear the coat and waist
coat.:
At the meeting of the Law Asso
ciation Wednesday evening the stu
dents were favored with an interest
ing talk by Mr. R. A. Daly, repre
sentative of the West Publishing
Company, who has been lecturing
here on "How to Find the Law."
Mr. Daly, in his genial manner,
amused and edified his hearers by
many reminiscences and by the reci
tation of some excellent verse of his
own composition.
Among the atten(lants at the
funeral of a lawyer who, though an
agnostic, had led a singularly up
right life, was a prominent Phila
delp'Yhian who arrived just after the
minister had begun his sermon.
"What part of the services have
they reached ?" lie ask-ed an old
Quaker.
"Just opened for the defense," was
the reply.
