Law Association Notes.
After having suspended opera
tion for two weeks, due to the in
tervention of and out of respect for
examinations, the association again
assembled Wednesday evening for
a short business session. A goodly
number of enthusiastic members
were present, and all heartily entered
into the regular order of business,
and for a short while, seriously con
sidered and discussed the needs and
purposes of the organization.
For good and sufficient reasons,
it was unanimously decided to post
poiie the trial which had been
planned and arranged for the occa
sion, until the following meeting.
Consequently, the Honorable Moot
Court did not convene; however,
Judge Etheredge gave notice to
counsel that the case of the State
vs. Hamilton would certainly be
t.. tried at the next term of Court, in
S order to clear the calendar and
c3 bring the docket up to (late.
This case against Peter F. I-am
:, ilton has created much local inter
S est, which may be attributed, no
oi doubt, to the high social standing
"a and general prominence of the de
fendant; and judging from the zeaJ
and dexterity manifested by his at
torneys, and the assiduous and dili
gent researches which are being
made by the solicitor and his able
assistant, it will, in a-ll probability,
be a hard fought trial from begin
ning to end. The accused, who
stands indicted for forgery, pro
claims his innocence, and has en
gaged distinguished counsel to de
fend and vindicate his rights. At
torneys Wise and Monash -are confi
dent that the defendant will be ac
quitted, while Solicitor Barr and
Mr. Black seem determined to con
vict Hamilton at all hazards. Much
geinuine interest prevails all over
this jurisdiction, and the final out
come of the trial is awaited amid
conflicting predictions.
The recent election in the asso
ciation resulted as follows: Presi
dent, J. Murray; vice president,
Mcl,eod ; secretary-treasurer, Black;
clerk of court, Monash ; sheriff,
Johnstone; reporter, Jennings.
Creatore's band certainly had a

Dr. Mitchell Speaks in Charleston.
Dr. Mitchell left for Charleston
on the 8:20 train Wednesday morn
ing to attend the midwinter meeting
of the Federation of Women's Clubs,
lield that afternoon. These exercises
were held in the Ilibernian Hall,
commencing at 4:30 P. m. Dr.
Mitchell, who was the speaker of
the occasion, charmed his audience
by his scholarly address on "The
Making of Modern Italy." As we all
know, this was a subject upon wlhich
Dr. Mitchell was vell qualified to
sl)ea,k.
Leaving Charleston, Dr. Mitchell
went to Deland, Florida. There lie
delivered an address before the stu
dents of Stetson Univeristy. By
these various addresses Dr. Mitchell
is doing much to make .this Univer
sity knowtn in many States, and his
ability as a lecturer causes a favor
able impression of this institution to
be had wherever lie goes. He will
return to Columbia o.n the 20th.
