"Swell Dope," Says Manager Hoey.
The "dope slinger," after trailing
all over the campus, at last drifted
down to "Senator" Topshe's, in search
of one J. S. Hoey, commonly known
as "Shakespeare," or "Shakesbeer,"
manager of the track team, for the
purpose of securing an interview.
Entering the poolroom, which was
filled with smoke and a continuous
hubbub of foul balls cracking together
to the tune ,of such expressions as
"Rack 'em,p, Bubber," "Hey, George.
bring me a dope," "Who stuck you?"
the writer sought the last table, where
the "Shakespearite" could be seen
through the smoky mist, shooting a
"classy" game of pool.
Stopping the game for a second, the
manager, with a cigar perched in the
corner of his mouth at an angle of 45
degrees and balancing a cue on his lit
tle finger, gave out the following inter

"Swell dope, yes; that track team is
going to be on the job. (IHey, George.
bring us some dopes.) Yes, we ex-.
c pect to take off the championship of
6 the State and to push the Southern
2 championship. (Racy 'em up, thb
ber ; rack 'em up ; don't loaf round so
much.) The manager continued: "I
am arranging a nice schedule; think I
will get a meet in Spartanburg during
the festival, pretty Converse girls, bo,
got a head on me. Will also probably
go to Charleston, and will have a meet
here in Columbia. I haven't sized up
material yet, but looks like some good
stuff. Work will begin immediately
after exams. -lave some more dope
for you later. My break, Uriah?

With these remarks the manager,
removing his cue from its balanced po
sition and tilting his cigar at a differ
ent angle, proceeded to make a heauti
ful break !

I receivedl my G.pHIEcoci today, and
the sight of it made me immediately
(letermined to write another letter.
You may ask why it is that this issue
is inspiring enough to call forth such
an effort, and in repiy thereto I will
say that I think it was the nice cuts
and the announcement of the found
ers' day progran. I well remember
the same event last year, when the
beautiful building that,is this time to
be dedicated was corner stoned (if we
may be allowed to coin a word.) An(d
then, also, (do 1 recall the first prIesenl
tation of the McMaster medal,.and
later the alumni smoker, which we
.enjoyedl so much. I said then thai
wvith the opening of Davis College andi
the building of the prIesent LeConte
College, that (lay w~as almost as sig
nificant in the life of the University
as the original founders' (lay, for that
(lay, in my opinion, marked the begin
ning of a newv era of growth in our
life. The dream of the four hundred
students wvas then about to be realized,
andl once more the old school seemed
to be in the very heart-throb of the
State's activity. There never- was any
reason, save political prejudice, foi
our 01(1 college not to grow, and niow
that the p)eop)le have begun to realize
that ou1r e(lucentinnal system mu1st noi
suffer for our so-called political in
clinations, then that cause was re
moved, and this, coupled with the fact
that it was our good fortune to secure
a worthy man to succeed our beloved
president, made our school grow as if
there had been favorable circum
stances all along.
I ddn't know when I have had such
an enjoyable time as I had at the col
lege Christmas. They were all there
-the Hoeytite, Buietite, and all of the
others. John looked just the same as
ever, running about like a jumping
jack, hither and thither, but ahvays
overbubbling with a wholesome brand
of college spirit. And the marshal's
office had not moved one inch from its
accustomed place. All was the same,
even down to the seedy looking fresh
men, with their accustomed high sport
or two that were the vonder and ad
miration of their more timid brethren.
I don't expect that I will be able to
recognize a single one of them by next
year, so changed in attitude will
they be.
How are prospects for baseball this
spring? From the talk Christmas I
gathered that we were to have once
again a team that would make our
rivals sit up and take notice. Wright
gave me an outline of the schedule,
and from his remarks it seems that we
have a goo(l schedule. Basketball is
all the go out this way now, and it goes
without saying that Castle Heights
once more has a team that is destined
to mop pill) with everything. We won
our first game by a score of 60 to 10.
IBasketball is surely a great game when
it is played right, and these boys out
here seem to know how to play it.
There is not much more for me to
say at this writing, save the old toast,
"H[erc's to Carolina; may she ever be
right, but, right or wrong. here's to
Carolina." (You may use this if you
are short of copy some time, in any
way that you wish.)

Garrick Club Will Practice.
Immediately after examinations the
Garrick Club will begin practice for a
play to be presented early in the spring
for the benefit of some. public enter
prise. At the conclusion of the first
reading parts will be assigned. The
play selected is "The Magistrate," by
Pinaro. It is a humorous comedy
with pleasing lines.
It is the desire of the club to give a
tryout of any and every man in col
lege who has any histrionic ability, so
if you have a (desire to become a mcem
ber of the club, see the membershiip

and Giuera rd. Remember that events
